Question Alarm System

I just purchased the '06 Taco that I was looking at and I would really like a nice alarm system to protect my baby. Just curious since there aren't a whole lot of threads about alarm systems...what are some people running? Also is the RS3200 worth the $300 or so I can purchase it for online, or should I go with something a little more pricey? Thanks guys.
Mike

you can always spend more... but don't have to. and don't get the toyota alarm upgrade.

shop for a local alarm installer, who backs up his work. check his reccomendations. and compare shop, that way.... search the forum, there's a bunch of alarm info out there, including remote start stuff.....

the toyota security system is actually a good unit. i'm really happy with mine. very high quality compared to the stereo shop cheese-dick jobs imo.

does the toyota security system use the same key fob?

do they have harness connectors already that they plug in to?
what are the other advantages?

Yes you use the same fob, to be able to have the factory alarm your truck had to have keyless entry. The harness is sort of a pain to install but its a good unit.

yes, uses the same key fob. install is a matter of plugging in a bunch (a BUNCH) of existing plugs to the harness. toyota has just always had a high quality alarm system. mine came with one from the factory but my friend's did not and he just bought it and put it in. took him a couple hours (he is a toyota tech though-probably take a normal mechanically inclined person 3-4 hours or so)

chances of the oem factory alarm going bad are rare

most aftermarket alarms dont last long.. and have more problems compare to oem factory arm..

other than that.. the factory immobilizer is just fine for me.. besides.. car alarm with key switch and immobilizer still gets car stolen..

imo -aftermarket alarms is.. they send power that back feed thru alot of the systems.. to turn the lights on which i dont like the idea cuz that just frys electronics

I opted not to get teh alarm on my 08. If someone really wants my truck, that will not stop them. Who pays attention to car alarms anymore anyways.

I have other things to spend my money on.

Just because you have one doesn't mean you have to act like one!

right now all i have is the "security upgrade" that came with my trd pack. which is just keyless entry and engine imobilizer. correct me if im wrong but the imobilizer is basically that it wont let the truck start without a key (though im sure theres ways around it)

i'll say this, i've had bad experiences with cheap alarms and fly by night installers. If you want an alarm buy from a reputable place even if its more expensive.

would it be worth paying the dealer to install the OEM alarm to keep everything under warranty?

the imobilizer does require your vehicles key to start it if not it wont start.
the person that can get around it would most likely need to be a computer hacker.

Nothing will stop a pro but a bullet....when a pro succeeds your vehicle disappears and you get a check.

A good alarm will stop an idiot and that's where you need the protection. The 791XV when properly installed will do that and it does not bypass the factory security system. You have double protection.

Better to lose the truck than get a ragged out POS back.

i would pay attention to it if it were going off in my driveway at 3:15 am. that's the point.

I appreciate all your responses so far. The problem is that I have a bunch of no-good kids in the area that will take whatever they can. I think the alarm will deter at least that. Honestly as someone else said, if a pro wants it, the pro will get it. In that case, cut me a check Mr. Insurance. I've heard good things about the factory alarm, and the fact that it plugs into existing connectors is a plus. When you add to that, I could probably accomplish the install in a handful of hours thanks to the endless supply of FSM articles on this and other forums it is making me lean towads the factory alarm. For those of you that have the OEM alarm, how sensitive is the alarm? Does it take someone breaking into the truck to set it off, or will it be tricked by some ricer with a fart can exhaust? Thanks again.
Mike

The OEM alarm is ridiculous i can rip one out in a second!!! Aftermarket alarms are better. Top of the line is Viper and Python. My reccomendation is Viper 791XV it cost $180 www.sbhcorp.com there's a new one 5900 and the 7900 the difference is the 791 gets 1/4 mile reception with an LCD screen(black and white) and the 5900 gets a mile range with a black and white LCD screen and the 7900 is the newest which gets a mile range and it's a colored screen. your spendng $300 dollars on the other alarm and the 7900 is $390 and it has lifetime warranty with Viper and if you get it installed at best buy it's lifetime warranty on the labor. That's a great deal. The alarm is only as good as who installed it. I installed my alarm and let me tell you the remote start and all the acessories i've added on are GREAT. If you can't install it then look forward to spending some money for a good install but, it's worth it. You gotta get the add ons like hood pin switch, remote start. If you got any more questions just ask. I'll answer haha
