There are times during the hunting season when your driving in to a stand location where I shut my lights off and when I stop but still idling I could engage my park brake to turn off my DRL's so I have no lights on at all.
I haven't found a way to do this with my 2006 tacoma and I'm not necessarily sure you can without doing a modification.
Is it possible to turn the park lights off when idling?
I assume that before you get to your area of interest you can shut the truck, engage the E brake by a click (or two or three), and drive the remainder of the way with whatever lights on that you want.
I thought about that and it's doable considering the short distance...I'll give it a try and see how much resistance a click or two on the park brake creates.
BTW, I just read that 7-10 clicks of the park brake is normal. Any more clicks than that requires an adjustment. Just thougth I'd pass that on.
Hey thanks! That works and is good to know when one needs to turn the heater on but doesn't want the lights to come on when the engine is started.
I guess as your driving in though, there is no other way than to shut the engine off, engage park brake, and start engine?
That's the only one that I know of.
BUT, try doing a search for the DYI DTRL sticky. It explans how to put a DTRL relay in. You might be able to wire an in-line switch to that relay to turn off the lights while driving.
Restart the truck with the parking brake enaged. DTRL will be off.
Does this work on auto trans or just std? I'm wanting to install the DTRL mod, but for the same hunting reasons mentioned I have not installed it. Those amber lights are bright.

My 98 corolla had DTRL's. I cut a wire off a controler box above the glove box and spliced in a switch.
I would assume the taco has something similar, and with the DIY to add factory DTRL's someone else mentioned you should be able to figure out a wire to splice a switch into to shut off the DTRL's.
Doing that should make the lights operate in manual mode when you flip the switch so the stalk on the column controls them just like not having DTRL (flip the switch back and they'll act like stock). I put the switch on my Corolla thinking I might actually want them sometime, but I've left the switch off for the last 5-6 years!

I have figured out how to modify the flasher box to disable the DRL's and posted it in the DIY section. Personally, I hate the daytime running lights and couldn't wait to eliminate them. You have to cut a wire and then feed it with source to keep the lights off. You can either modify the box or do it in the harness. I can't remember the details but it is all in the post in the sticky section.
