Mod is my co-pilot: GPS/XM/Radar Detector

I had a bunch of electronic devices strewn all over the cab of my truck, power cords and antenna cables snaking everywhere. So, I decided I could better integrate my GPS, XM controller, and radar detector. It meant covering the little storage compartment in the back of the console with ABS plastic sheet and black suede and converting it to an enclosure for the GPS and XM module. The GPS is a fairly inexpensive but sophisticated TomTom One. The radar detector is very cool. It is a remote mount Escort SRX that not only detects radar but actually transmits a signal to block police laser. The remote antenna for XM and the GPS are on the roof.

Power to the people!

Here's the cluster of electronic weaponry from a couple of angles:

A close up of the head unit for the hidden radar detector:

The almost undetectable radar modules in the lower grille (small plastic modules in lower left and right):

That's a far better use of that pocket than the trash can I use it for. I need to do the same thing. Here in AZ my electronic devices mounted in the direct sunlight get so damn hot I can't handle them. My portable Pioneer XM radio gets so hot it's almost to hot to put in my pocket.

Nice job, I like the end result.

The radar detector works well. Escort makes nice stuff. Next best thing to diplomatic immunity.

Very clean install. I had the same Escort SRX on my BMW and it saved me many, many times. It was also nice not advertising to LEOs and theives alike that I had a radar detector in the car.

I have a gps and satellite radio too... gps is above my rearview mirror and the satellite is on a bracket to the right of my radio.

The savings on fines and insurance if you avoid simply one ticket a year for five years: $2,000

Not having to drive at roughly the same speed as a muumuu-clad woman in a dinged-up mini-van for the next five years: Priceless.

Does the Passport SRX detect POP?

I haven't had a radar detector in over 8 years. I'm thinking about getting one, but I'm afraid I'll get too brave with it. It seemed like I got more tickets when I had a detector than when I didn't have a detector.
