I've read so many threads on tires that head is spinning. I know the Dunlop AT20's suck but are they unsafe? I can't justify spending money to change new tires out for new tires unless they are unsafe. Thanks for your opinion.
Don't just take what a few people saw about them. Go to Tirerack.com and look them up for the reviews on so many aspects of the tires.

Opinions are like Buttholes....Everyone has one! They all can stink at one time or another!
Just because you have one doesn't mean you have to act like one!
Have you hugged your kids today?
I don't think they're unsafe. I'm still riding on them after 6000 miles. They suck, yes. They really suck. But as long as you drive safely, they'll be fine. However, I have found that they have *terrible* grip, even on dry asphalt. If you push them at all, you'll lose traction. This morning I rounded a sharp bend at about 18mph. I usually take it at about 12mph. The tires squealed like Ned Beatty. One step beyond squealing is sliding.
I feel like I really have to be careful around corners. The truck seem "skittish" even on the Highway. I drive 100 miles roundtrip each day for work and 98% of my driving is on the highway. Well, I guess I will place an order for seme Toyos. Any recommendation on the Open Country AT or HT? My truck is the 2007 quad cab PreRunner.
Yea but the stock tires suck too. They don't grip what so ever. On the dirt or the asphalt. I'm also looking into buying some tires. But, good tires means spending alot. If you go bigger you probably already know that they will not fit unless you lift your truck. There is to many trucks out there running spacers which is only good for a short period of time. So when i get new tires i'm going bigger and better which means a slight lift on my truck thinking about going 3inch lift either dh or Kings. Kings are alot more expensive. So just look forward to dropping some cash.
ok i will not be a jerk today because i can tell u they are unsafe. From my experiences my truck became a ''Drift machine'' when it started raining, i was making a left turn when a car decided to run the yellow-to-red light, i had to punch it just a little to make a lefty. Sure enough my truck began to tailspin sideways almost hitting the corner and a lady pushing a shopping cart. YES VERY DANGEROUS. i had to regain traction SINCE THERE WAS NO TRACTION and the whole truck began sliding, and not just the back the WHOLE truck started sliding....a week after i swapped out my rims and got some Yoks..they arnt the best but, Wayy better than the stock DUN-SLOPS...
Mine were fine for ~40k miles, in the snow and rain.
Next snow/ rain day take them to a parking lot and understand what your truck will do in those conditions.
Practice will make you safer than any tire out there can.

^ Yep.
I had mine for close to 30k. They do suck, but once you realize their limits you can drive safely with them. On the other hand, if my wife drove my truck I would have replaced them because if you aren't inentional with them they can be dangerous.
(BTW I know have BFG ATs and couldn't be happier.)
i had a set of at20's on my 4runner that i gave to my mom and they still drive fine...i only had one mishap in snow when i slid because i accelerated too fast and the whole car froze up but that was entirely driver error
the stock tires are bad only compared to other top notch tires...they're perfectly driveable or they wouldn't be on the trucks to begin with
I just replaced mine with open country's to accomodate a lift but the only time i had them slip was when i took off too fast on wet roads, so I cannot complain.
^Same here. I wouldn't say the Dunlops are "unsafe", just not as good as other tires is all. Like others have side, safe driving is your responsibility so know the limits of your vehicle and drive under them.
The Toyo's are a good tires, though. You'll notice a difference, for sure.

I don't know how you guys got 30K miles out of the dunlops (245/75R16). It took getting stuck in the snow at 13K miles for me to look at the tread depth...and it was already time to replace them.
Changed tire size to 265/70R16 and went with the Rugged Trails at that time which also was a mistake. They slipped on dry pavement all the time squealing all the time when leaving a shopping center for instance. After 30K miles, the edges wear down far enough that there's no channels left to clear water/snow/slush from the tire while the center had plenty of tread (this is a design flaw if you look at the channel depths of the tires when they're new...way shallower at the edges). So, had to replace them at 30K with plenty of "dry weather" tread left.
Now running BGF All Terrains and what a difference!!! No more slipping in any pavement condition (dry, wet, or snow) and no more tire squealing. Noise level from the Rugged Trails is the same, but the ride quality with the All Terrains has improved dramatically. The Rugged Trails used to give me a little bounce feedback on the freeway after being parked for a while (must be poor flexibility?). The All Terrains are smooth as can be on the freeway, and I've never gotten that bounce problem after being parked for a long time.
I'll be getting the Michelin LTX on our Highlander next fall (Goodyear Wranglers suck), so I'll be able to compare the traction on those in a foot of heavily rutted snow...albeit with a different vehicle.
