Differential Chatter?

My truck vibrates and kinda shakes when turning. This mostly happens when the truck has been sitting for a while and then goes away after it warms up. I took it to the dealer and they said it was differential chatter. I had changed the diff oil with mobil 1 and added the extra lubricant so it would not chatter when I serviced it. Dealer said the diff did not like Mobile ! so they changed it. Well, I got the truck back from the dealer and the vibration had gone away. Two weeks later and it is back. Will take it back to the dealer again. Has any one had this problem before, and does this sound like chatter to you or could it be something else. It sounds like it is coming from the front end. Dealer said it was because the vibrations are traveling through the frame. Thanks for your help and input.

I would say it's not you dif because your bed would shake like crazy and you probably couldn't drive your car that well. But since the Dealership touched it, it their responsibility now. When did this occur? did you just do a tune up or anything??

i'm thinking it's too bad you've already mentioned that you've put in synthetic oil... toyota, i think doesn't reccomend it.... possible if they get tough about fixing it under warranty, they could say that the synthetic oil could be the cause.

did it shudder befor you took out the stock, diff oil?

i've read a few threads here about the dealer replacing the lsd under warranty. but i don't remember an explanation of the trouble... try searching.

No, the shudder was not there before. I replaced the diff oil at 30,000 miles. There was no shudder at all for the next 5000 miles. I took it to the dealer so they could do an unrelated TSB and also had them do the 5000 mile service while it was there. A few days after I got it back i started noticing the vibrations. I took it back and was told they could not reproduce it. It just started getting worse when they finally noticed it. They changed the diff oil. 2 tacomas link is exactly what is happening to my truck. I will take it back to the dealer once more and see what their explanation is. Thanks guys.

Don't know if you fancy trying another oil but, mine did exactly what you are talking about. Not a heavy chatter but quite noticable (no, the bed didn't shake). Mine while turning, backing out of the driveway mostly.

This was after changing the oil. I put in Amsoil. A week later, ordered their LSD addative. Worked from the get go, chatter went away and stayed gone.

If you do opt to do this, get the addative in there with the first quart. Putting the addative in afterwards when the diff was full up was a messy pain. And order one of their hand pumps unless you have saved one of the cone shape bottles. Amsoil comes in the standard (motor oil shaped) bottles.

I thouht I was imagining shit. But mine does thi weird vibration only after it's sat a while and usually when backing up and turning. Mostly in the morning and then when I come out from work too. The first diff fluid I changed at 15K and used the Valvoline and some additive, no problems at all with that. Well I was bored and changed to Royal Purple used no extra additive since it was supposed to be in there, it was changed to RP at 30K miles. Now around 50K or so is when these weird vibes started. Not sure why it's just now doing it after 20K miles or so. I have the Valvoline I started with and a bottle of additive and I think i'm going to change it and see if that helps any.

Guys...
I had the same issue when switching to mobil1 and amsoil (w/ friction modifier).
Here is the fix...
Put 80-90w in it.
Had no rear end chatter or vibes prior to adding syn 75-90w oils.
I had amsoil in it... then had to add the friction modifier to it... still had chatter... drained it then put in mobil1. Had to add friction modifer back in it... still had issues. Went to toytoa parts and aske for their gear oil. And was told that they dont carry 80-90 by the quart. They get it by the drum. Told me to goto Pep boys. Went there and grabbed 4 quarts of Castrols 80-90w (No full syn available). Put it in and all my vibes have gone away. No more chatter. It usually occured in the am after the truck sat all night... i would pull out and it would vibe everytime i would turn for the first mile or so. I have not had issues for the last 3 days since switching.

The 80-90w is so much thicker than the 75-90w. Huge difference bettween the 2. I didnt have to add the friction modifier either.

The transfer case is the only thing that takes 75-90w. Front and rear diffs call for 80-90w.

We were using too light of an oil.

Easy fix fellas dont goto the dealer to get this 'fixed' get the right oil first... if you still have probs then have yota take a look.
