Steering wheel radio control installation.

I am new to the Tacoma community. I got my 2008 Tacoma TRD Sport about a week ago and I love the truck. My truck did not come with the factory radio controls on the steering wheel. Is there any way I can install the steering wheel controls from another Tacoma ?? Other than the steering wheel controls, what else do I need to purchase ?? Can I keep my OEM single-CD radio or do I need to buy a radio with the CD changer ?? Thanks for the help !!

Something not right. Sounds like you got a stock truck & the dealer stuck a TRD Sport sticker on. With the sport package you should of got the 6 disk changer as well as the steering wheel audio controls....Look at your window sticker to verify the package your truck has

The premium audio is not included in the sport package.

Interesting thread though. I'd love to have the controls on the wheel.

Yes, I too thought I would have gotten the upgraded stereo but I checked the sticker on my Taco and the premium sound was NOT part of the package. I got the TRD suspension, stickers, hood scoop, towing package, etc. The truck is a legit TRD Sport package just no premium sound. I want to get the 6-CD headunit and the steering wheel controls so I figure I need a steering wheel off a Taco with the controls. I am guessing this should be pretty straightforward but I wanted to see what is involved in the project. I can't believe somebody hasn't already done this install yet..

Always fun to change steering wheels on a vehicle with Airbags...
Seriously, just be careful and remember to disconnect the battery before you mess with the steering wheel. I've seen pictures of some messy encounters with airbags deployed while working in the vehicle. Expensive to replace too.

you can probably just get the controls from a truck at the junk yard that already has the airbags deployed to save you the risk and I'd imagine it'd take less to install them than replace the entire steering wheel.

It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it. Aristotle

This is something I didn't consider. More than the fact that the airbag is a hazzard while working on the steering wheel, it seems like the airbag cover on the wheel with the controls is smaller than the one without the radio controls.

Can someone post pictures of a steering wheel equipped with the radio controls next to one without ??

I tried to do this on my 06 sport but it was too expensive. You need to buy a new airbag because the plastic cover is too big on the sides and would cover the controls. If you have another toyota to switch with it is no problem. the clock spring is the same so all you would need to switch is the airbag and the controls with cables.

Does anyone have a diagram, part number, picture of the cable/harness ?? Are we talking about a simple harness running from the steering wheel over to the radio ??

I am pretty sure if I take my time I can find a deal on the airbag/steering wheel with controls on the web. The harness on the other hand, may be a challenge to source.
