New Tacoma's back up camera?

Does anyone know the part number to the 09 tailgate handle camera? Also how over priced is it? I am wondering if I can replace my handle on my 07 and plug in the video input in my aftermarket HU. Not sure if this part exists as a stand alone piece. If anyone has info regarding this, that would be great. Especially pics of just the camera unit. not it mounted on the truck. Thanks

I would bet that its going to be a toyota specfic plug. Doubht it will plug in to anohter head unit. Besides doesn't it plug in to the rearview mirror? There are proably cheaper allternatives. I seen the audivox one but the mirrors is huge I guess if I keep looking at it I will eventually decided its not that big and get one. What I would like to do is upgade my headunit the one I Just installed put in the G/F car cause she likes it. and get a dvd fold out for the taco

If anyone knows of any quality/reasonably stylish aftermarket rearview mirror backup cameras please let me know. I have a liscense plate camera but need a monitor. I would like to avoid dropping a grand on a h/u with a video display. If I have to go that route I will get one with gps, but if I can avoid it, I can buy a cheap garmin and use the mirror for the camera monitor.

The Toyota one looks pretty nice.

Off topic but, the way tailgates are stolen now, I can't imagine this will help the situation any. $300 on Ebay for regular stolen tailgates, can't imagine what one with a camera would go for.

That is sad, but it is probably true.

Navotaco, I would go with this one. Seems to be of good quality and prob the same one that most auto companys go with. Let me know how the camera works out.

I just got another tacoma to add to my fleet. 2009 5 lug 2.7 2wd 5 speed. Pretty much a base model. But this truck is one of a few made that had an error at the factory . There is a backup camera in the tailgate and wiring, but not the rearview mirror display. I got memo from Toyota saying they are looking into adding the viewscreen at the dealer level.

The 09s all come with the tailgate handle/camera but not all have the mirror, all you have to do is buy the mirror and hook it up.

All 09s in Canada don't come with tailgate cameras! I will post the memo I got from Toyota explaining that they are working on a fix. Could it be as easy as buying another mirror?

Say what? I have looked at my local dealership, and the ones that have the camera, have the mirror. Why on earth would Toyota put cameras in tailgate handles and then not hook them up?

Ive seen base model trucks with the camera in the handle and then looked at a base model mirror in the cab. My dealer told me they all have the camera now but some do not have the mirror. I know we shouldn't trust a dealer but when I saw it for myself I believe it. It is probably cheaper for Toyota to put the same tailgate handle in all trucks rather than differentiate between models. The camera is considerally cheaper than the mirror.

I can't imagine the camera is anything but a simple 2-wire/coax camera. There would be no reason for it to be a multiwire data line. It would just cost more to manufacture. I'd be willing to bet the plug is a proprietary plug, but cut it, strip it, and solder an RCA on there, and you've got yourself a camera. I'm interested in this now, too. I'm going to look into it.
