tailgate not staying latched

The spring is broken on my tailgate and it does not stay latched. Is the spring in the center behind the handle you pull to release the 2 end clamps or does each end clamp have its own spring?

Thanks!

Don, it both. The handle itself has its own spring return and each of the sides, called lock assy's by Toy, have their own. The handle has a cam-affair that connects a rod to each side. The spring action on each latch can be tested by opening the tailgate and moving them one at a time. You should be able to lock the latch by pushing it downward and in doing so feel the spring tension. Same with the other side but one side does not move the other. If they are working correctly they can only be unlatched by moving the handle. Sounds like something in the handle has jammed or broken so that rods have retracted to open the latches.
