As most of you probably know, I am obsessed about the Toyota Prius. So much so, in fact, I probably know more about the vehicle than I do our Camry (I'm serious ). I'm really thinking about getting a Prius when I graduate from high school in 2007, and by then chances are we'll have enough money to buy a used one. However, I hear that insurance costs a lot on hybrids. My question is, how much more expensive would it be?
Maybe current or past Prius owners could answer this.

Depends on your driving record (and parents credit if you're still living with them), but being an 18 year old male (youthful driver) you're gonna pay $$$ !!
I can give you sort of a ballpark, I work at an insurance company so i'll see if there's a close comparison and do a quote for a prius... what year though?
Maybe a first-generation Prius (2001-2003, doesn't matter) as compared to our vehicle (see signature for details). As of right now I'm just planning on what type of vehicle I should get and when I'm finally serious about getting one (sometime in 2007) it'll be then that I'll start searching for a specific brand, model etc. But I'm aiming for a Prius, though.
Currently Dad's paying ~$50/month for the Camry through Geico. Mom thinks insurance for me with liability alone would cost $300+/month on a "normal" vehicle, but it doesn't seem possible. Oh, and I've never had any problem with the law so I guess my driving record is "clean"
Thanks in advance

well, my dad and I both have discounts since I haven't been in an accident since I got my licence on gr 10 and my dad hasn't gotten into an accident since 2000. It seems the insurance cost is similar to our Camry.

Well, from a recent experience, of my wife owning a 2000 Toyota Prius S, which she had only insured for 3rd party accident cover, and not the full cover as she should have, and getting the quote from the panel beater to repair the damage to the car, I`d say "Insure any Prius at full cover", or be prepared for hefty repair bills.
Would you believe it, the rear left door to replace new is nearly NZ $4,000 alone.
Actually the total quote price to repair the car was over NZ$18,000, the car was only worth $10,000 before he crash, hence, she`s become a parts vehicle now.
I should have mentioned, my wife went to sleep at the wheel of the prius on the highway, hit a lamp standard, and went over a 50 metre deep bank, thats how the car sustained the damage.
Amazing car though, as after that ordeal, the car was srill drivable, after being pulled out of there by two tow trucks, just badly bent at the rear.

That's pretty insane, glad everything is okay! This thread is like 3 years old haha!

As I already wrote here I am looking for a new car and I ogle with a Toyota Prius Hybrid. At the moment I am quite sure that I will buy one and I also thought about insuring the car for 3rd party accident cover only but I guess this is not a good idea. I think I will choose full cover just to be sure that I do not have such a hefty repair bill. I also compared different car insurances but I am not quite sure which one to take. I also saw that car insurances in Germany are actually much more cheaper than here but I think I will not immigrate to Germany just because the insurance is cheaper. Hopefully I will find a moderatly priced insurance here.
