steering noise in '03 prius

I have been hearing some noise from the steering column when doing hard turns in my Prius. I figure it needs power steering fluid, but don't know where the fluid goes in. Is the steering fluid container accessible?

Hi...I had to have the entire steering unit replaced on my 2003 Prius a month ago. Get that checked....the cost was 1, 972 dollars....yep...that is how much it cost. This car, this year 03, is not great....my next story is going to send chills through you......Three days ago a ROD went through the engine block causing a four inch hole in the engine.....this car has 60K on it. Cost of repair? about 8K. Toyota officials are having them tear the engine down to diagnose the cause. They may pay for this but we have not heard yet. We were preparing to buy a RAV 4 next but this has soured us a bit! HONDA? No more hybrids for us.

We complained about a coolant leak to the dealer a few times but they always did the check and change on the oil. A very smart mechanic we discussed this with in Canada said the coolant may have been entering the oil circulation system and destroying the lubrication properties of the oil. When it became bad enough the piston seized and the shaft snapped.

So there you go....I will keep all posted to let you know if Toyota stands by their vehicles.

Since 2001, all Prius use electric power steering systems.

2001-2003 had some issues and Toyota finally admitted it with free replacement steering rack until recall, even if out of warranty.

If you previously paid for steering work on 2001-2003, you may be able to get reimbursed. Talk to Toyota corporate office.

Also, Prius have no starter, no alternator, and no timing belt. If anyone tries to sell you these parts for your car run away!
