Toyota will pay for the repair of the engine ($8,000) and we will get a loaner car. Honda here we come! I love this little Toyota but cannot keep it since we lost so much money on it. The steering unit replacement cost 2000 dollars two months ago. All of our gas savings and then some were lost on repairs. How much is a 2003 Prius worth with 60K on it? (Of course it is well maintained!)
Any input would be appreciated. We will sell it ourselves.
Congratulations Odie!! Try www.edmunds.com for pricing info as well as your newspaper (print and online versions) and the auto trader (print and online) versions to help you with pricing.
Try www.cartalk.com and look for the Car Talk Advisor section to help you with ideas for your next vehicle.
I'm interested in motor oil. If you are reading this thread and Odie's other Prius nightmare thread and it is making you nervous, do a used oil analysis (UOA). I use Blackstone labs and would recommend their expert interpretation http://www.blackstone-labs.com/dyson_analysis.html
Thank you very much for these sites. I looked at Edmunds.com and found it to be very helpful. I cannot believe how much a resale value is on a Prius. I do not want to trade it in since I know a dealer will offer much less that what the car is worth. I am going to trade in another vehicle instead. (94 GMC Jimmy) I really want to have the money in my pocket for our next vehicle.
We are looking at a RAV 4. I will research this vehicle and test drive one soon. I also love the guys on Cartalk. I listen to them often. I will check out their site as well. I have met a fair number of RAV 4 owners who are content with their vehicle. They have not had major repair bills either with their vehicles. I have also learned to purchase a extended warranty on ALL the vehicles that I own from now on!
A question I have regarding our Prius is this: The dealer is fixing the engine so does that make the engine "new" again? I am not sure what type of "fix" they perform after a rod breaks in the engine. (I am not a mechanic) I know the steering unit is new since we bought a new one ($2K) in February '06. The rod left a four inch hole in the bottom of the engine block. Do they drop a new engine in it? I have not discussed this with the dealer yet. I will. We do not have the car back yet. Just wondering ahead of time what the fix entails.
Prius has ELECTRIC steering, there is NO $2000 steering classic on it!

Before posting this defamatory Prius post you should have informed yourself that what you are affirming does not make sense, simple because Prius does not have the classic car’s steering unit, at Prius is all simple wires and a simple electrical block remote controlled from the position of the steering wheel based on WIRES – IT’S ALL simple ELECTRIC – NO $2000 imaginary for these simple wires who never end conducting a simple 12V Volts signal, and the physical friction is to imitate the classical moment resistance is all imitation, it could have been rather a very simple joystick with no resistance at all, so your posting is SIMPLE NOT TRUTH, AND PEOPLE LIKE YOU PROBABLE NEVER DROVE a Prius not talking about owning one, or maybe you are hired by some poor competition?

Read the section on Power Steering Assistance. This should give you a better understanding of the subject.

Thank you for all your help out there!
a new shortblock is installed. all of the old accessories/ timing chain, oil pan etc is re used (depends on what the tech ordered to be perfectly honest). the head is reused. if a valve was bent, it will more than likely be repaired rather than replaced.

Is this English? Gee I am married to a Canadian and he does not talk like this at all. What is this person saying here? That I did not pay that much for a steering unit? Call any dealer in WA state and ask how much it cost to replace one of these puppies and then you might be surprised. I have the bill and paid it too. Right, I was hired by Hyundai to defame Toyota.
^^^ Interesting, I'd like to see some evidence from both sides. So if Odie wants to prove puicac wrong, please post some pics of your Prius.
Then we'll see what's Judge Judy's verdict
I certainly will post a photo of it when I get it back next Monday. It is almost completed. To all you nice guys out there who gave me feedback I thank you very much. Onto the RAV4 next. Toyota is still good in our book.

Odie, internet forums are like the Wild West (ranging from extremely good to extremely bad). My advice to you is when you get "flamed" by someone, just totally ignore it (as if the post were not there).
Also, the information posted is often at least partially wrong (including mine), but in aggregate, the information is often amazingly helpful. I agree with foompla's assesment that the dealer probably rebuilds the engine in the way described.
I would suggest you get a trade-in price quote from the Toyota dealer(s) and from one of the big superstores (CarMax, AutoNation). Remember that the Toyota dealer can sell the car with an extended warranty meaning that most people will pay the dealer more than they would pay you for the car.
If you have the time and inclination, you can get more if you seel it yourself. But then you have to deal with strangers and being careful not to get scammed (like a counterfeit Cashiers check). So you either have to accept a huge bag of cash or you have to do the transaction at the buyers bank that the check is issued from.
I found useful information here www.carbuyingtips.com Yes, they are trying to sell you stuff, but if read through the website, you will be more informed.
I think that a new RAV4 sounds like a good choice for you, especially if you get the 4 cylinder model that gets quite good highway mileage (as long as you keep your speed down to about 70 mph). The new Camry also looks very nice. It is a matter of personal taste.
Addendum: A "Fax Attack" idea I got from the www.carbuyingtips.com website or a link he recommended did save me over $2000 when buying a Lexus IS300 3 years ago.
The car is still at the dealers....they need to install fuel injectors now and that will be over 700 bones. They are talking with Toyota again to see if they will help. I think we just ended up with that one in a million vehicle that has problems galore. I will sell this car and go for the RAV 4. We are driving the Camry now, (06) as a loaner. It is very nice. I would consider looking at that model too. Thank you for all the suggestions on future car purchases. I think this will all fall into place. So many people I talk to love their Prius'. I did too but the cost of fixing it is amazing should something go wrong. I promise to always get a extended warranty with every vehicle I buy from now on. This was an excellent lesson for us.
And you are right I should ignore those strange posts.
