Navigation System f/ prius bought without it

Hi Prius fans!
I have this wonderful Prius (European model) that runs so well that decided to make it happier making operational the option of the navigation system (model 2004: monitor, map and navigation control buttons are there, but no hardware to make them work).

But oh Lord... The dealer says: Toyota does not have that accessory to upgrade those models like yours. .

Any sugestions??? I am wiiiling to pay more than the price of those portable GPS that we stick on the dashboard
Thanks a lot!

You can't add the OEM Toyota navigation system if your car isn't equipped with it from the factory. You're better off buying a Tom Tom One (or Tom Tom Go!) portable GPS system. The thing is, it's not just the buttons and hardwiring them. You need the DVD reader, antenna, gyro, and other sensors that the GPS system needs.

You can upgrade but I don't think you wanna do it. Since you need to have alot of $$$ (navigation computer USD$4300, GPS antanna USD$500 plus hook up the screen to the computer)and time. I took me more than 60 hours and CAD$800 (computer and antanna get from junkyard) to install the navigation system on my 01 prius.

I am wanting to do the same. The quoted $5,000 price for the nav computer is a joke. (Almost as bad as the $300 for a replacement key and remote.) WHY, do they charge 1000% mark-up on these.

The Nav computer doesn't cost them more than $430 to manufacture. Just as the keys and remote do not cost more than $30.

*blargh*

ea8631, you say you were able to find a computer and GPS antenna for $800 Candadian from a junk-yard. That's what I am thinking of doing.

The thing that is so so stupid. Is that the Prius has all the buttons for the nav system. So you are constantly, hitting these buttons only to be told half of the buttons on the console do jack. It's annoying.

It's like, okay, I know one of these buttons SHOULD switch between the two display modes (engine/hybrid operations and fuel efficiency monitor) but none of the one's I've tried do so. They simply inform me that the GPS external unit is not connected.

Can we say some really dumb stupid people came up with this setup?

^ I do find my nav computer from US junkyard since the first gen prius Canadian model didn't come with GPS as standard nor optional equipment. They charge redicious price for those GPS component and replacement disc because you no need to pay subscription free to use the gps service (just like you are using a cellphone but you need to pay air time and stuff) and they need to mark up the price to cover up the cost.

I understand that they do have switch preinstall in the dashboard because it will be cheaper for them to design one type of dashboard, but I hate those "dead switch" in the dashboard, so that's why I retriofit the OEM GPS system back to my prius. I took me almost a whole year to collect all the right parts. If you want the part list for the retriofit, let me know and I will send it to you or post it here

I would love a part's list (and any installation advice you might have). You can email it to me: Saj @ easternstorm DOT net

Though I think it'd be a good idea to post it here for other looking to do the same.

Hey Jason, here is all the parts to complete the retriofit (for my 2001 prius):

> Navigation ECU P/N 86841-33060
> Bracket, Navigation ECU No.2 (Left) P/N 86274-47040
> Bracket, Navigation ECU (Right) P/N 86274-47030
> Cover, Navigation ECU P/N 86843-47010
> Disc, Disc Player (DVD Map disk) P/N 86271-33030
> Antenna Assy, Navigation P/N 86860-47050
> Wire, Floor, No.3, W(EMV & Navigation System) P/N 82163-47100
> Screw: For Navigation Antenna x2: P/N 93568-55012
> For Brack to Floor x2: P/N 90119-06390
> For Navigation ECU to Bracket x4: P/N 90153-50012
> For Navigation Cover x2: P/N 90467-14051
> Instrument panel wiring harness with daytime running light P/N 82141-47080

The P/N mught be different for different years. Here is the part list from dealer:

I obtain all my parts from a doner prius which is from ozgrl.com and they are speciallized on parting out wreck prius.

Here is the doner vehicle:

But I think they are out of business since my main battery was dead back in february and there is no response and the site is dead when I try to contact them for a used battery.

Here is a brief procedure:

1. Before do anything, disconnect the 12 battery power first. Then
remove the front seats and the center console, door still plastic
trim, and the whole dashboard.
2. Lift up the front part of the carpet, took out "Wire, Floor ,
No.3" and refit the " Wire, Floor, No.3, W(EMV & Navigation System)".
3. While the dashboard is out, took out the old "instrument panel
wiring harness" and refit the "Instrument panel wiring harness with
daytime running light" and the navigation system antanna.
4. Put everything back together. But put the navigation system first
before put back the passenger seat, then you are done!

If you want more detail decription or wire diagram, let me know and I will try to scan the page from the repair manul for you.....(but give me some time to do that)

The total time for this retrofit (I'm not mechanic, and just follow
the factory manual) is less than 60 hours.

I only took three photo during the retriofit (I should took more).
