Alloy wheels under hubcaps?

A friend just got an 2008 touring model and told me there are alloy wheels under the full hubcaps?
Her husband is the service and parts director at a Toyota dealership and
says he will get them chromed.
Curious why they would put plastic hubcaps over alloy wheels in the first place.
Anyone seen these chromed?

save weight? plastic is still lighter.

Not the 16" alloys. Those are gunmetal underneath and look pretty cool to me.

USA Hub Caps

When someone rubs a curb with a mag wheel its ruined with the Prius you just buy a trim ring a lot cheaper. Sgt Tip

We bought an '07 touring and picked it up the same time as another couple got theirs. We didn't care too much about the plastic over the (rather nifty) gunmetal alloy, but the other guy insisted that the dealer remove the plastic covers. While the center of the alloy wheels was empty (exposing the hub & castle nut, if I remember correctly) it turns out that the center caps from a corolla will snap neatly in.

By plastic covers removed at the dealer, they mean the clear plastic that they put over the wheels to protect them from damage during transport. It's different from the plastic cover you speak of that covers the gunmetal alloys.
