I heard that the Prius is being investigated for reports of it stalling at high speeds. Has anyone experienced this or at least know any more details? I'm considering purchasing a Prius, but this is a concern.
-Thanks
got an 04 prius, and haven't had this problem....yet. my dad drove it from here (columbus, OH) to St. Louis (8hrs drive i think) and he didn't have a problem. He also got 55+mpg to boot and only had to fill up once, when he got back into town
Good luck with your decision.
oh, btw, call a dealer and ask which VIN's are affected and just make sure u get a good one
Well, that's at least one reassuring vote , and thanks for the advice. It would definitely help if they were clustered by VIN or something. I'll definitely follow up on that. The highway gas mileage sounds great too, especially given that's what I'll be traveling mostly. I know they're known for being great in the city, but I have a new job that's going to take me on the highway 3 days/wk.
There were reports of 13 Priuses Stalling at highway speeds due to a glitch in the software. However that was 13 out of how many thousands of cars. It affected aparently Late 2004 early 2005 productions and Toyota issued a service Bulletin and a software upgrade for all Priuses from 04 and up. So the issue has been resolved.
I think that there had to be a certain condition and spot in the software script for it to happen. So it wasn't something that happened all that often so probally took a few cases for them to realize that there was indeed a glitch in the software. But wants it was discovered the programers wrote an up date, and Toyota sent out a service bullitin, Which is not a recall per say but as people come in on service with a certain VIN series on there car, the service department will install the software update.

Of those 13 that stalled, 99% of them were 2004's...if anything, the advice on getting the 2004 over the '05 really doesn't make a difference one way or the other. The problem in percentages is extremely low given the amount of Prius' there are out there. You should be fine buying a 2005, no reason to buy a used 2004, besides, you wouldn't get the $2000 tax break if you buy used. But, if you want to buy, get it before the 2006 model year, as next year's tax break is only going to be $500. Typical of our government...reduce the tax break after a couple of years. But hey, when is the last time they stuck with ANYTHING that actually made sense?
My office owns around 200 Priuses and I personally know someone who had a 2004 Prius that stalled on him twice. The first time was on the highway while he was going 50 mph in heavy traffic in the left lane. The second time was on the streets while going around 35 mph. He loves the car in every other way but wants to get rid of it now.
The 2004 Prius they gave to me has been great though -- no problems yet.
i would wait to buy a hybrid cause the nickel metalhydride batteries are heavy and with new lithium batteries on the way the cars will be lighter and stronger
