Hi I was wondering if anyone knew what kind of oil filter the 06 highlander Hybrid needs for replacement. I am getting tired of paying $45 everytime my oil needs to be changed and it would be a lot cheaper and faster for me to do it myself.

Same as any 05-06 V6 highlander. I've changed mine twice already. Oil filter is hard to find--up under plastic shield in front of engine (from underneath).
If you jack up the car or put it on a lift, there is a large black plastic shield covering the underside of the car forward of the engine (between the engine and the nose of the car, essentially.) This is the shield that one needs to remove (there are at least six or eight screws). The oil filter is on the front of the engine, just a little right of center, as I recall, pointing forward. Interestingly, there is a little plastic trough/funnel sticking out just underneath the oil filter that helps funnel the oil away from the engine and into your drain pan after you take the filter off. A most thoughtful touch by Toyota!

Thanks, I was wondering where the filter was. I've been changing my own oil for 35 years and was thinking maybe I won't be able to on the HiHy. Any other suggestions on how to change it easily. Do you need to remove the plastic shield to get to it?

I finally had a chance to change the oil and oil filter today.
1 hour to find the oil filter on the car, and 20min to drain, and change oil.
It was so so much easier on the BMW. The filter were located at top, and if you had the oil extractor tool, you don't even need to go under the car.
A 36mm socket will remove the oil filter cap, and you replace with a new cartridge. No funnel required to pour the oil, it was a perfect fit for the castrol 1 qt. bottle opening. No chance of that with the Toyota, you need a long enough funnel to even reach the oil filter fill hole.
Not the most convienent if you are trying to top up at the gas station.
But at lease I don't need to jack up the car to change oil.

This is the Canadian tire oil filter I've been using.
It's about $5.00 ish.
I really wish you didn't have to take a panel off to change it, and inevitably when I take off the filter I tend to spill some oil. (there is no way, as far as I can tell to reach it from the top). You must remove the 8 bolts (10mm)
The oil fill is a bit hard to reach too, I kept an old 1Q oil container and cut the bottom off, and a small notch into the left side of the spout, and use this as a funnel. When filling, the oil takes an imediate left turn instead of going down. If you use a funnel there is a tendancy for the funnel to block the exit to the left, and then the oil overflows and makes a mess.
Filling up the oil is WAY harder than it should be.
This makes it a lot easier.
I own a 06HL and I change the filter from on top. I use a cup style filter wrench, a 3" extention, and a long handle ratchet. It a tight fit between the engine and fan but I am able to loosen the filter then reach between and bring it out through the top. when you take the filter loose the oil that drains out hits a plastic piece just below the filter which drains it out so it does'nt drip on the frame.

PH3614 looks to be a fram filter. Fram filters are consistenly rated the worst filters in comparative test of oil filters. I wouldn't use a fram on my lawnmower, do your engine a favor and use a decent quality filter. On my '06, I too have been able to get the filter off/on from the top without removing anything else for access. Definitly do get a long stemmed funnel for filling the new oil into the recessed fill hole.
It turns out that AK_Highlander has a point, there is some controversy over the Fram filter quality, and apparently motormaster oil filters used to be frams:
I found this on wikipedia:
Motomaster is a line of automotive products sold exclusively at Canadian Tire stores. Products branded as Motomaster range from small items, such as oil filters, which were manufactured by FRAM (as of 2009, the oil filters are manufactured by Bengbu JinWei Filters Co.,Ltd of China),
