Question Premium Gas...?

The Hybrid Highlander manual states that it requires at least 87 Octane gas, but higher octane is preferred.

I've been running 87 Octane only, since I'm a cheapskate.

I've always understood that if you're not hearing engine-knock, then there's no reason to buy premium gas... But I think this gets more complicated with computer controlled variable timing engines. Does this old rule still apply?

And more specifically, is there really any reason to run high octane gas in the Hybrid Highlander? Will it increase my mileage? Will it increase my mileage enough to pay for the more expensive gas?

Thanks,

_Am

probably not. It's mostly for hp so if you want extra power (or are towing a trailer) then use a tank of premium. In most cases, regular should be fine.

I bit the bullet, and switched to 93 from 87. I'm seeing a noticable improvement in fueld economy. My mileage as displayed on the dash went from 25ish to 30ish almost immediately.

Time will tell if this continues, but for now I'm a firm believer in burning premium gas in the Hybrid Highlander. The mileage improvement for me is more than enough to pay for the more expensive juice.
