08 Highlander Hybrid Steering Wheel Noise

I just bought a 08 Highlander Hybrid and I've had one small issue with a clicking noise when I make turns. This doesn't happen all the time, but it happens enough to a point where it's starting to get on my nerves.

When making a left or right turn on a street, or making a U turn, I get this knocking (which I can feel on the steering wheel) or somewhat of a "clicking" noise. I took it into Toyota and they had several tech's take the car out for a road test. They were not able to hear anything but when I drove off the lot after getting my car serviced, I felt it again...

My service adviser told me to monitor the issue and bring it back in if I heard it again. I wanted to see if any of you owners had a similar problem with your steering.

Any help would be appreciated. I've searched this forum and others for answers but didn't really get much help.

I also have the same steering wheel clicking sound problem. Seems very unusual to me. Plan to take it in to the dealership, however, it appears to be random and does not occur all the time.

Also the right hand windsheild wiper makes a rubbing sound when it completes the wip cycle and is returning to its home position.

It definitely is random. If your dealership can shed any light on this let me know. I'm going to try to road test it with one of the tech's.

If anyone finds any other information about this issue, please post it in this thread. I've been trying to search for an answer to this problem for a few weeks.

Thanks!

I took my Highlander in this morning to get the steering shaft replaced. I found another thread about this and a few of the guys mentioned that they had the same issue. I'll let you know when I pick up the car later on tonight.

Hopefully the problem will be fixed

Just got my steering shaft fixed and the noise is gone. The steering wheel feels a lot tighter and overall it's great! For those who have this problem, don't let it continue....get it fixed. You'll notice a big difference. Everything is covered by the warranty so you might as well give it a shot.

Went to the local dealer ship here and they tell me that the noise is normal. Based on your results I will take the issue to another dealership. Could you tell me the location of the other thread that you found the dscribes the same problem?

I am having the same issue. I also noticed that the steering is fairly loose. Thanks for the advise. I'm going to try to get to the dealership this week.

P.S. I love this forum.

Hey Stelth77,
I get the same knocking when cornering at low speeds. The truck only has 800km on it and I haven't liked driving it yet. Feels loose and sloppy. Did you get your steering fixed yet? I wonder which dealer you went to so I don't go there either.

USA 2008 Toyota Highlander Sport - Steering Knocking Problem

I have the same knocking sound in steering in my 2008 HL sport. The car is only 500 mile, and start to hear and feel the knocking when slowly turn right, less than 20mph. I see many people having the same problem. Toyota should do something about this.
