I took possession of a new 2006 Highlander hybrid last month and so far have put 2000 miles on it. The EPA sticker said 33 mpg in the city and 28 on the hwy. The dealer told us 30 mpg in the city and 26 on the hwy for an average of 28 mpg.
So far we are struggling to get 24 mpg. Does anyone know, is their a break in period? How long? I think there is something wrong, am I wrong?
Roger
Hmm, some over at HiHyChat (www.hihychat.com) have gotten the 33mpg. There will be a break-in period like every new car.
Also, short trips will kill mileage. Anything under 5-7 miles will hurt the mileage since your engine's just getting warm and you shut it off cause you reached your destination. Hmm, I can't think of anything else at the moment. You could post at HiHyChat and see if anyone there can help

Hi Roger,
I also took delivery of a Highlander Hybrid In June 05. I was getting about 24MPG but it improved to about 27MPG after 2800 miles and limited use of the a/c.
I love the car and everything about it, particularly the GPS. Most of my trips range between 18 and 95 miles.

You know those epa things are almost always BS. There shsould be fine print that tells you what the ranges should be and i believe 24 is within the range of epa estimates. The highlander DOES need to be broken in. I noticed improved millage after about 3K on our 2005 highlander v6. No its not a hybrid but it is NOW getting around 23mpg w/ use of airconditioning and semi heavy footed driving. Give it a chance and once everything settles in, you'll see the improvements. Also check your fluid levesl too...mine came with low coolant...dunno how that happend.
Anyways once u feel the brakes settle in (ie. you can push the foot brake down way easier than before), you'll BEGIN notice the improvement.
I haven’t hit 2,000 miles yet (how could I my HH is in the shop for over a week!) but we’ve been getting 28.7 on the highway, 25.6 mixed driving.
I actually got 30 miles on one gallon of gas going exactly 30 miles but that was driving while watching my gas usage/consumption analysis from my dashboard and navigation system.
You do realize, of course, that you would have to be a robot to get the mileage that is stated in the window sticker, as no one drives like the system that tests cars for milage.
I have about 4500 miles on my Highlander Hybrid. I did not notice a break-in period. My normal commute is 18 miles one way with 17 stoplights, some bumper to bumper traffic and some highway (55 mph). For this commute I routinely got 31+ mpg with the A/C on. Now that it is a little cooler, I am getting 33+. My best mileage was 36 mpg for one round trip.
For a 200 mile trip on the interstate at 65 mph, I got 26 mpg.
For Rita, I evacuated to Austin, a 200 mile, 20 hour trip. Most of that 20 hours was spent either sitting still or moving ahead two or three car lengths at a time. I used just 10 gallons which I attribute to the fact that the gas engine turns off when the car does not need to generate electricity when the car is stopped. OK, 20 mpg is not that great, but I didn't run out of gas either!
Hi all ~
I took delivery of my HH in mid July in VA ... then drove it 1500 miles to Florida. Since that was high speed driving, I wasn't surprised when I averaged 24.4 ... I was impressed with the handling which is fantastic.
Here at home, I do all short trips and the BEST I have been able to get is 30 mpg. It seems that no matter what I do (no a/c, no radio, drive 45 mph, etc.) I don't get any better.
My question for all of you is this: DOES ANYONE GET A FULLY CHARGED SYNERGY BATTERY SYMBOL? My battery has never risen above the Level 6 shown in the manual.
I wrote to Toyota but just got back a lot of double talk. If you all tell me that you frequently see the battery at full charge, then I will take the car to the dealer and find out why mine is not working properly.
Many thanks to any of you who reply ... it's important that we exchange information with each other and that's why I'm so glad I found this site.
I just took delivery on my Highlander Hybrid. I have gone through one tank of gas and only got 300 miles on it. This calculates to less than 20 MPG. I have the all wheel drive model which is EPA'd at 31/27. I have just filled it up with 87 octane and will see if it improves? At this point I am greatly dissapointed and was getting better mileage with my 6 cylinder SR5 4 Runner. I do have a suspicion that the mileage is temperature dependent. It seems in this thread that those of you living in warmer climates are getting better gas mileage. It is winter time here in Iowa so am hoping this may be an effect? Any comments?
