I'm not too sure about the 05. I've got an 08 but that's not a fair comparison.
The xB isn't as low as it looks. You'd be surprised how well it will get around in the snow. Snow tires are ALWAYS a good option. I live in rural Iowa and I've got snow tires. My xB did well with all seasons but snow tires were great.
I don't think you'll be dissapointed in how it does in the snow but remember, tires are everything.
