Radio Problem on New XA

My Scion XA is only two months old, but already I have encountered this strange problem on a number of occasions. While I am driving, my preset radio station will change to another station on its own. This has happened both on AM stations as well as FM ones. For example, if I am listening to 1010 AM, the radio will suddenly skip to 1020 with static reception. If I am listening to 98.3 FM, it might jump to 98.5. Once I put it back on the preset station, it stays there for the duration of my trip. But this has occurred at least a dozen times already since i have owned the car. I spoke to my local mechanic (not Toyota), and he said that the tuner is bad and needs to be replaced. He said the problem will get worse, and so I should contact Toyota service to have them replace the radio. Needless to say, I am quite upset over this! Has anyone else experienced this problem? Thanks!

P.S. - I have an appointment with Toyota tomorrow morning for them to check out the radio.

UPDATE on radio Problem on New Scion XA

I brought my 2006 (two months old) Scion XA to the dealer today to check out the problem I was having with the radio, and sure enough, I need a new radio. They did a self-test to see if there was a problem, and my radio did not respond with the code needed. So they have to replace it. Aarrgghh!!! I am quite annoyed, to say the least! A new car and it already needs a new part!!! Let's hope this is the last of it!

mariegn,

I just had mine replaced and it's not acted up since. Interestingly, while I was waiting I checked out the new '06's in the showroom and they have a newer version of the radio with two knobs on the outside, and the SSP button in the middle. It's not the 6-CD version either, but it does supposedly change colors.

UPDATE on radio Problem on New Scion XA

Hi, Al,
Which Scion do you have and what year? I think it's interesting that you also had the radio replaced.

I had the same problem with my 06 Scion xA. Over at ScionLife, a bunch of people were reporting the same problem. I think some had xBs as well as xAs. The problem is obviously in the first batch of the new radio (the 06 has a different radio than the 05). I had the dealer replace the radio, and it hasn't happened since. It only happened to me early in the morning when the car and radio was cold, and it only happened occassionally (although often enough to be annoying).

Basically, it's a known problem that affects a lot of the first batch of 06 radios, perhaps all of them. Take it to the dealer and they will replace it under warranty at no charge.

mariegn,

I have an '06 xA with about 9K miles on it. I purchased it last October and the radio started acting up in December. Since I've had the new radio installed about 2 weeks ago, I've not experienced any track-skipping or station-jumping.

Radio skipping stations has happened to me a couple of times before, was considering taking to the dealer to check it out but I thought it was just no biggie. Recently, i just got my amp and sub put in and everythings fine and dandy ..so far. If the radio does act up again, I dont think Toyota would fix it due to the avoidance on the warranty. ::crosses finger::
