USA Air filter won't fit on my 04 Scion

I have been changing my air filters a few times without any problem. Recenlty I bought a filter from Pep-boys and it won't fit. Then I bought one from Kragen (different brand), samething happens. The fitler can fit inside but the case won't close. I campared with the old one and they look identical and slight bigger. Anyone out there has this problem?

I would get the right one from a dealer so you don't have fitment issues.

I had the same problem with my '05 xA. I tried a Wix filter (generally a very good product) but the rubber gasket was too thick to allow the housing cover to close. The parts store then offered another brand, but it looked just like the Wix and, again, the cover wouldn't close. So I bought the Toyota filter, P/N 17801-21030, $23. I guess I'll stick with the factory filter.

I am glad that I wasn't the only one had this problem. All the air filter I got from Pep Boys/Kragen... I need to take out the black rubber in order to fit.

A good seal between the filter and both halves of the housing is important. If you removed the black rubber seal dirty air could be bypassing the filter. Not a good thing. I suggest trying a different brand, or just sticking with the Toyota filter.

Toyota's list on the filter is only $16.00.

HATEnFATE, that's intereting about the price of the filter. I'm looking at my invoice and it show for P/N 17801-21030 a list of $25.00, but the "nice guy" at the parts counter sold it to me for $22.50 because I belong to the Auto Club. Maybe the parts are higher here on So Cal, or maybe the dealership is trying to boost profits during the recession. I saw only three other customers in the entire dealership when I was there. Thanks for the info.
