xA transmission question...

My buddy owns an xA, and he regularly (in my opinion) beats the hell out of his automatic transmission by dumping the car from a fast reverse into drive without stopping. Now if he had a 5speed, he could get away with that, but with an automatic.. isn't he putting alot of unnecessary wear and tear on his transmission?? He won't listen to what I have to say about him doing that, so I thought I'd post a question about that here, and see what you guys have to say. (this would apply to any car with an automatic, not just an xA..) If nothing else, the car doesn't seem happy with his impatience, b/c it doesn't ever sound like a "happy shift" :/

Thought so. Ok, now would any of you guys know how much abuse like this a new tranny can take (miles)? If say he was suppose to get ~100k out of one, how many miles would he get by beating one to death like this? I just want him to see this thread so he'll get it through his head.

Well, in my old '90 Plymouth Laser with about 120K miles, I hadda replace the transmission thrice...Course, I also did alot of hard driving so that coulda contributed to early tranny death, too.

Your friend is an idiot.

He will have a fun time with Toyota when they deny his warranty coverage after taking his tranny apart and seeing it has been abused.

He should man up and learn to drive a stick if he wants to do that crap. At least a manual tranny rebuild is cheaper.

Either way it's abuse. Doing that to a manual would wear out the synchros and clutch prematurely.

Basically, your friend is an idiot and he will get what's coming to him in the end.
