Help~Valve Adjustments & Timing chain

Hi, everyone

I have 05 Scion TC. Today I went to do the oil change service. (70000 miles)
I got two questions.

First, The guy from toyota told me that my car needs to do "valve adjustments"

However, I didn't feel any wired thing when I stepped on the accelerator. It goes smoothly and I didn't hear any weird sound.

So, do I really need this service? Or can I wait until I feel anything weird then I do it?

Second, I know scion tc uses timing chain. So do I still need to worry about changing it? or when is the best timing for changing timing chain?

Thanks a lot~

The only reason that your engine should need a valve adjustment is if you have what they call a "tappet noise" I've rarely seen a vehicle that needs adjustment in the first place and most that do are well over 100,000 miles. It sounds like maybe they are trying to get a little money but don't take my word for it. If you are unsure, take you vehicle to another dealer or even a small repair shop and ask them to listen for any strange noises in the valve train. Tell them what you were told and ask if they have the same opinion.
Valve clearance adjustment is an expensive and drawn out service. Make sure you need it before you get it done.

This is from the scheduled maintanence guide.........

Quote:

Engine Valve Clearance
Check for tappet noise and engine vibration and adjust if necessary. A qualified
technician should perform this operation.

Thanks for help

Thanks for the answer~
Actually he also told me that I need to do transmission fluid service and cooling system service.

I did once before on 38853 miles (transmission), and 28893 miles( engine coolant).

now my scion is 70105 miles.
Do I need to have these service every 30k?

Also, I found different dealer has different name for the service.

here is one of them

1. " automatic transmission service: drain, refill & inspect transmission operation".

2. "cooling system service: drain radiator & refill with 1 gallon of coolant+, pressure test cooling system & pressure test cap for leaks, test system for performance, inspect water pump, hoses & belts.

It charges $119.95 for two of them.

because the guy gonna charge $179.95 for the "transmission fluid exchange", and $119.95 for "cooling system fluid exchange".

Here is my question

cooling system service = cooling system fluid exchange ?
automatic transmission service = transmission fluid exchange ?

if not, what is the different?

Thanks so much for your help~

Your dealer is charging to do a complete fluid flush on the system which takes more time and uses more fluid. Generally around 14 quarts of fluid for an auto trans and 2 gallons of coolant for the cooling system.

the second dealer you looked at is only draining and refilling the fluids. On a tranmission, you'll not be getting all of the fluid out since there's still fluid sitting in the torque converter. On the cooling system, I would imagine they would get about the same result doing either a flush or a drain and fill since you still "flush" the old out with water before you start adding new coolant.

Either way you'll be alright. The flush is more complete but the drain and fill will still do an alright job.

Dealers will generally do flushes since they are more complete and small shops will generally do drain and fills because it's cheaper which gets you in the door and the flush machines are expensive.
