I just got my first toyota in october, its a tundra SR5 2005 model.I have had different opinions about the right octane to use from 3 toyota technicians, either 83 octane or 91.Im just going to ask the tundra owners for the best answer,if 83 octane is not going to hurt the engine why pay more for 93.If there is a problem with the lower octane i would like to know,as of now i have 3000 miles on my truck.I have owened chevy, ford and dodge trucks,so far i am very impressed with this toyota. Thanks
Well I dont have a Tundra but I do have a new Tacoma. It does tell you in the owners manual what to run or at least it did in mine. Mine states that a minimum Octane Rating of 87 is recommended and for increased performance in Toyotas wording to use 91+. Might look through your manual and see what it says. If you arent having any pinging problems there isnt much need for the higher octane. Mine has the 4.0L and I have ran it on all 3 grades of gas we have here 87, 89, 93 and have noticed no real difference between any of them. No pinging on 87 so thats what ive been running mostly with gas prices.

Thanks for the advice,i looked in the manuel as for as i can tell 83 is ok but they recomend 91,i`ll run 87 for a while and see what that does.Im getting 19.6 running back and forth to work with a little interstate driving, hows everyone else doing with the tundra 4.0 Im hoping to get at least 20.5 around town Thanks for ya~lls reply
Best I can figure is I usually put about 18 gal in at fill up since I stop to fill up shortly after the gas light comes on and at that time I have 330-345 miles on the tank. That's been pretty consistent through the 2500 miles I have ran so far. Mileage hasnt gotten better or worse at this point.

i have never seen 83 octane gas, this is somthing new to me
if you have 87 octane, just use that. almost all vehicles made in the last 10 years that dont have a factory high performance engine will take 87 octane. going higher is a waste and can do more harm than good in the long run. your engine was made to run on 87, use it. dont go lower, until you hit atleast 150k miles or have some means of boost or other high performance engine mods, 87 is what you should use

Nor have I seen 83, but anyhow I was having some trouble with pinging in my 05 and now I'm on my 3 third take of 93 and the pinging is gone so I guess it's what ever you want. This is my 5th Tacoma and I would'nt own another but this is the first time that's ever happened to me and it kinda pissed me off. Since the 93 fixed the pinging I guess that's what I'll have to keep running unlees you would use some octane boost on a lower grade?

unless you have the S-runner or another high-performance engine set-up, i would first try going to a different gas station (if you havent tried already) and then ultimately taking it back to the dealer. a brand new normally aspirated, non high-performance engine shouldnt have any pinging at all with 87, especially if it isnt under load (towing, heavy acceleration, etc.) i would seriously take it back. doesnt seem right and its gonna be a big money eater in the long run.
the only engines that need anything above 87 octane are high-compression, supercharged or turbocharged engines. and this is coming from a toyota technician.

i said this didnt i? i guess coming from me, it didnt mean anything cause i aint a tech
i got 3 friends that are all certified Toyota techs at the dealership here. trust me, i dont give advice that cant be backed up
Ok guys i understand what your saying, in my owners book it say's if you notice a slight ping try higher octane. Why would it tell you this if it wasn't correct?
I think the operative word here is IF you experience pinging. Since you did experience some pinging did you try a middle grade gas first and see if that got rid of the pinging? I think it may be partly determined by the gas quality in your area too. I always buy gas from a major distributor and not some rinky dink station. Generally Mobil or Exxon, luckily those are provided fuel supply by the same company so I havent had the problem of bad gas. The manual is correct and doubt anyone is trying to tell you otherwise. In some cases there will be folks that have to run the higher octane due to whatever reasons. I'm just glad I dont have too since I already have one vehicle that requires premium as it is, damn the nitrous requiring 93 octane.

Thanks for all the input!I put 93 in it and engine has lost that little click in it.Technician said the 4.0 and 4.7 has that noise he said it was those individual coils clicking either your engine has it or dosnt, nothing to worry about, but my little click seems to be gone I hav`nt checked but just looking at the miles and the fuel gauge it looks like my milage went up putting 93 in truck will let everyone know if it went up,all in all im very pleased with my first toyota
