New engine for old 4runner

I have a '91 4runner that is missing on one cylinder (low compression). The suggestion has been to replace the engine which has just over 401,000 kms. Can anyone recommend a source for used/rebuilt 3 litre V6? Also, does anyone know what other years will work in my truck? Thanks!

I think 88 through 95 used the same 3.0 V6. That engine has a nasty habit of blowing head gaskets, it seems. Mine just went. Do a google search and you can find several places that sell remanufacured long blocks on an exchange basis. Or find a used one somewhere.

I got mine from the eBay seller gnt_engines. They are from Arizona. Great customer service and great price (compared to the other prices I've seen and been quoted). My new engine is gonna get thrown in this Sunday... I hope.

There is one here in L.A. Calif. that may ship you a motor, company is called... K. Watanabe Corporation (KWC). Also check Toysport.com website regarding the type of engine that will work for your truck. If you can get a used but a later year motor the better, like 97 and up.

New engine for old 4runner

I just wanted to thank you all for your ideas, information and recommendations. I bought and installed a '95 engine (only took three days and lots of coffee!) and my truck is back to normal (actually runs a better than she used to). What a difference and I'm definitely happier than going truck shopping again. Thanks!

I had a Samurai with what the mechanic called a dead cylinder, it took her in for a smog test. I took her home pulled out my Chinese $15 compression tester to find the 3rd cylinder was at 45 psi while the 1st, 2nd and 4th were around 150psi. I adjusted the valve clearance and then did it again and she was at 145psi. I was glad I didn't let those guys work on her.
