Installing a Tach on 1996 Tacoma 4wd

Has anyone attempted this?

I have a base 4wd, with a 2.7L. The combi meter has no tach. I'd like to install one and have been investigating the wiring diagrams but I am unsure how to proceed.

The distributor has an internal coil and the ignitor is behind the air cleaner box. The Haynes manual show tach out from the ignitor, but what wire is it?

Where does the green wire from the tach connect to? Any advice on which wires to tap (and how for the remaining red/black/white.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Bob J.

Dear JRHawaii, I no longer have the truck and I can't remember how or what I did. BUT, I did get it to work. I bought a Sun Super Tach. I researched on their web site at www.sunpro.com for the basics. I have some notes written on the directions as follows: (not sure if same for a 2003!, mine was a 1996 model.

I had to add a circuit (can be found at auto stores)
My notes say tap the green wire from the ignition on the firewall/pass. side wheel well.
thread that wire to the tac inside, supply power from your new circuit.
tricky part was making it light only when the lights were on
you have to tap an existing wire off the dashboard display so when they light it lights

(again I don't have the truck to confirm) sorry!

I know that between the instructions they were good and the website I got it done.

Hope this helps a little. Good luck.
