Thumbs down '99 Tacoma starting problems

I have the same problem as the fella w/the '96 Tacoma posted previously, turn the key and nothing, turn the key and a then it starts, barely. I put a new battery in and the problem still exists so now I think it's the starter which it turns out to be a common problem w/toyotas. BTW, mine is a TRD prerunner w/V6, 85k mi.
So here is the big question: Has anyone tried the starter rebuild kit with this generation Tacoma? Please let me know how that went and if you have any tips I would be greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

Charlie

starter

Check your connections at the starter often you may find a bad or corroded starter solinoid wire. If that is not the problem try replacing the starter with 1 from napa . Get the brand with the lifetime warranty and you will only pay for it ounce even if it does go bad again . Just make sure to hold on to the receipt. good luck

Thanks for the reply. I don't think that it's the wire although it could be, I live in dry California and really find it hard to be corroded. Is there a rebuild kit for the starter? I am reluctant in dropping nearly $300 bucks for a starter.

Starter probs

Ok, I had a similar problem on my 92 22RE. The starter wouldn't go, it would just 'click'. I found a great webpage (which I can't find now offhand) that showed how to rebuild the starter for like 20 bucks. In my case, the starters always failed because the contact on one side was worn down. All I had to do was buy these two parts:

$13 - qty. 1, Starter Kit, Toyota P/N 28226-72080 (battery side)
$13 - qty. 1, Starter Kit, Toyota P/N 28226-72010 (motor side - if needed)

and then take the starter out and replace them. For a not-so-mechanically inclined guy like me to be able to do it and do it right, it can't be THAT hard. Lotta swearing getting the starter back in, but you could eliminate that by jack-standing it (which I didn't do, you CAN just do in by reaching in through the passenger wheel well if you got good clearance, not reccomended though)
