How much should it cost to replace fuel injectors?

Hello,

I have a 1998 tacoma with 130k miles on it.
The mechanic says itt needs to have one of the fuel injectors replaced.
I'm pretty sure the diagnosis is correct after reading up on the symtoms in these forums.

The mechanic (Amco transmissions) wants $500 to replace one fuel injector.
Is that a fair price? I have no idea of what labor is involved.
Also, should I have all the injectors replaced since the truck has to be torn up to get to the one bad one??

Thanks,

Sam

What problems are you having with the truck?

$500 is pricey for one injector, and I have almost never heard that one needs to be replaced, usually just a cleaning.

PS tell us what engine / transmission you have, too

Thanks for your reply.
The truck has low power, runs poorly when warmed up, lurches.
The engine is a small four cylinder with auto trans.

Is the check engine light lit?

If so, have you had the code read? You can get it done for free an Autozone.

Yes, check engine light is on. Thanks for the autozone tip.

I replaced the spark plugs and wires. I'm pretty sure its the fuel injectors that are the problem although I am open to all advice and suggestions.

Assuming it is the fuel injectors, is cleaning/replacing them something I can do myself?? I am pretty limited mechanically but I can follow a well illustrated manual.

First, get the code read.

Replacing an injector is not that hard, but it will require removal of the throttle body and relieving fuel pressure. I don't think it's a novice job, but it you pay attention, it's something you could do in an afternoon.

Get the code read. It will confirm whether or not it could be an injector and we can go from there.

Bet it's aftermarket mods. ANYTHING installed on the engine that's aftermarket (plugs, wires, air filters, etc) is a mod.
So think of all the parts you and the former owner installed under the hood that isn't a Toyota part.

It is very rare for a fuel injector to give trouble (especially after only 130,000 miles) so I'd get a second opinion before doing anything. And get the codes read too.
