CEL on 00 Tacoma

Hi, I just registered since I bought a Toyota . Look forward to meeting some people. I'm trying to learn more about cars and forums are a great place. Hopefully, you guys/gals will help a noob out. Anyways, here's my problem already:

I just bought a 2000 Toyota Tacoma and 2 days later I got a CEL.

I went to AutoZone and it read the following:

P0136 - O2 Sensor malfunction, bank 1 sensor 2

How should I go about checking this? I didnt want to just change the o2 sensor since that may not necessarily be the problem. Also, how do I find out what part I need if it is the o2 sensor? The stealership wants to charge me 85 dollars just to diagnose what I already know from the OBDII scanner.

Appreciate any help......

I would say that it is possible.
I do know the front one on the 97 seems to
go after about 80K

There's also http://www.partznet.com/ which will sell you a real Toyota sensor for about $93 the last time I checked.

I have 78,000 miles on the truck. I've reset the ECU and it came back with the same code. Bank 1 sensor 2 is pretty dang expensive.

The cat doesn't look like its been changed. I'm gonna test the o2 sensor with my multimeter this weekend to see if that's really the problem. Do you know if I can pass emissions with that o2 sensor malfunction?

In my experience... 80K is about right for the front at least. If you still have problems, then replace the rear.

Yes, it is a lot of money...

You can try this:
With the truck cool in the morning, look under there and find the o2's, clean them with a damp towel with water only, often times I am told that just dirt clogging the air passage can trip a code. if it looks dirty that may solve the problem. It, if coated with oil, is likely dead. Oil will kill them.

Whatever you do, if they do go out, get the codes reset with the ob2 reader or you may have more problems.

In my experience, usually within about
5-10 miles after installing a new one, the light will go out on its own... sometimes it will take about 70 miles and sometimes 200 miles, but you don't wan't to wait... get it reset asap.

And no, if the cel is lit, it won't pass.

I have a problem that mine keeps throwing a p0420 cat below threshold...

Tacomas seem to have a lot of problems here from the people I know. Mine is like a nightmare, I hope yours is not.

Since 96 if the vehicle will not pass smog the cel will come on. It's a good probably it won’t pass smog. Note: passably won’t pass.
