4AGE into My celica...

OK... well Sorta getting all my parts to do this swap. I figured that I'll ask on the general discussion so all the 4ag and swap pros can help me out. Its going into a 1975 Toyota Celica. What I am getting/Waiting for right now, is:

4age motor
intake manifold
harness, ecu, distributor
intake box
injectors and rails
t50 tranny
Possibly a T-W bellhousing
and i have my w58 on my celica

BUT... I'm currently debating on the transmission. I was told to use a T to W bellhousing on my w58 Transmission. Would be alot better then the t50 anyway (so I'm told)... My Next issue is the Drive shaft connecting to the transmission. If I do use a T to W bell housing on a w58 transmission, will it be less or no modification for my stock driveshaft? I mean I'm not dropping this engine into where it just bolts up.. I know I might need to fab up some mounts or something but I'm ready for that.. Got my mig, some metal... just need all my parts.. then I'll rip my engine out. but the drive shaft... scares me just a little bit.

Next is, the ECU.. Later on, I might go turbo... BUT what ECU would I have to change to if I need to change it?

Finally: whats the difference in HP on a Silvertop and a Black top?

Thanks again.

You need a EFI fuel pump set up along with a fuel return hoses/pipes, etc.. EFI system needs a lot more pressure than a standard carburetor.

4AGE gurus??? where?????

what's wrong with the R motors?? I would probably go to maybe to a 22RE or 22RTE setup if I was you. the R series has a lot more aftermarket support than the 4AGEs do, and I would rather have a torque monster than a screamer like a 4AGE.

the W series of transmissions seems to be the logical step-up for the AE86 guys, they usually drop their T50s to go with W58s.

As for ECU.. you need the one that comes with the motor. sure you can also go with a stand alone ECU but they're usually a LOT more money than going with the OEM setups.

As for HP, the Silvertop 20V 4AGE are about 160hp and the Blacktop 20V 4AGEs are about 165-170hp depending on the year. However both Silvertop and blacktops have no torque.

You can always say screw them all and go with a RWD 3SGTE setup for teh win!

-22R's are easy to find in all.. BUT, they cost alot just to buy parts after Market parts for them.

-THe ecu... Maybe I'll just keep the N/A then, and not even go turbo...

-Maybe... I could just buy a ST165 3SGTE and try to make that RWD.. Get like 2S bellhousing somewhere and just mix that with thte 3SGTE or something... but HELL NO... thats even more than a 4AGE swap...

Driveshafts should always be considered junk in a swap like this. They almost never end up the right length after you futz with the engine and transmission mounts to get the shifter where you want it/can have it. Custom aluminum shafts are pretty cheap in the scheme of things...perhaps $200 or so at a local shop, and you need to get the car to them. for measurements.

Well.. 4AGE parts are hard to come by.. specially for the 20V motors. Even OEM 20V parts are hard to come by as they were never sold in north america.

22RE/RTE parts are more available and probably cheaper for than 20V parts. I'm not trying to discourage you from going the 20V way, I have see pictures of 70s Celicas with Silvertop 20V motors in them, so I know its been done. In the end its your choice, you could end up going the 1JZGTE way.

Actually I'd rock the 1g-gte if you're looking for a rare swap...200hp stock, and mates to a W58 right out of the gate! Fairly long being an I6, but the smallest of them at 2L
