oil pump O-ring on 20R

Hi! I'm new here and although I searched the archives i didn't find an answer to my question.

My 1980 4X4 (20R NOT a 22R) is leaking oil, it is seeping out from the oil pump where the cover mates with the timing chain cover, It seeps out along both sides and at the bottom, but not at the top (as far as I can tell)

neither my Haynes or my chiltons tell me how to replace the oil pump O-ring, but they do tell me how to replcae the entire pump.

My question is, Do I really have to pull the oil pan to get to the O-ring? it looks like I can just pull the cover off and replace it.

I don't want to start something that looks like a 1 hour job to find out I have to pull the pan. that will take considerabley longer.

or is there something else that could cause the oil to seep from there?

thanks for your help.
