i just worked on my friend's 1995 ford contour. i after replacing the water pump and timing belt, i drove the car around and was curious to see how it compared to my 1996 camry with 70k more miles on the clock. night and day difference. im sure a lot has to do with maintenance, but the number of parts on the contour that 'didnt seem quite right' were staggering. hard shifting, noisy pulleys, engine not as smooth, windshielf wiper motor dying, handling felt loose, bottom-end starting to make a concerning noise... and the list goes on.

the camry is really holding up much better. this makes me worry about my wife's 2008 taurus that has its own set of random quirks.

If you want a Ford that lasts a long time get a Ranger, F150 or Fusion. The rest of their stuff is a crap shoot long term.

If the Fusion was anything like my POS Mazda6 it shared a platform with watch out.

That car was literally falling apart at 65K miles.

And trim level as well.

What went wrong with it exactly?

A friend of mine is currently looking at purchasing a used Mazda6.

2005 Mazda6 I Touring 2.3.

In order of failure.

Headlight condensation (30k)
Radio failure (30k)
Brake slides seizing at (58K)
Sticky throttle body (almost gummed shut at 60K). Using only top tier fuel
Headliner fell down (65k)
Valve cover gasket leak (65k)
Alternator failed (67k)
Popping in pedal when brakes applied (67k)
A/C line leak at quick disconnect (71k)
Thermostat failure. Requires removal of P/S pump and intake manifold due to being integrated as part of housing. (80k)
Headliner fell down again (82k)
And the straw that broke the camels back. Transmission slipping badly. (84k)

I was a member of mazda6club and get this its all common failures lol. I ran synthetic oil, only Mazda genuine parts and it still crapped out. The transmission flush I did required special Mazda M5 fluid which cost me 120 bucks wholesale.

The car handled amazing, looked great, and had good power. But man was it a piece of crap. The steering wheel buttons creaked, window was loose in the housing, cruise logic was way off, and it got horrible fuel economy. The best I ever got was 28MPG on all highway trip. Also the headlights were so dim you could barely see. This was something I noticed in all of them. My favorite part was the UAW sticker proudly placed on the RR window.

I bought it off my MIL by taking over payments (was my wife's car before we were married) for 3K and traded it on my Camry for $5500. After driving it almost 4 years lol.

Yikes!

Any thoughts on the Mazdaspeed6?

Or is it still as unreliable and prone to problems as the rest of the Mazda6 lineup?

So no go on a Mazda6 as a used car? Do you think the Mazda3 would be better?

I don't the MazdaSpeed fares much better as the turbo is built to the same standards. Definitely a cool car but not worth it. My buddy bought a Mazda3 and already has replaced the entire front end and rear suspension with only 65K. Control arm failures were a big issue with it. Also had an axle and other issue I can't remember.

This is not to say they sum up the cars as a whole. Check mazda6club and other forums yourself. The V6 6S are even worse.

Thanks for the tips. Did some reading over there and as a whole the MS6 doesn't seem too bad but does require a few upgrades to make it reliable before upping the boost levels. I guess that's to be expected on a turbocharged car.

That's too bad cause i"m a big fan of the MazdaSpeed6. Turbo, 6-speed manual, AWD. An enthusiast wet dream. Sigh. It would be perfect for the MN winters here. But I bet its costly to own. But I still want one or at least drive one

The Mazdaspeed6's greatest weakness is the transfer case, it tends to leak.

There is an alternative, Subaru Legacy GT Spec.B the only bad news is, that is a limited model...nearly impossible to find.

The MZR is a good engine stock. From what I remember reading they blow up at just over 300HP. So lots of people don't really build them.

They are amazing looking cars though. The styling is top notch and in stock form with RX-8 wheels its tough to find a much better looking car.
