Interested in having a new, more powerful engine put in my 1992, 4x4, R22 four cylinder pickup truck. Problem is, I can't seem to find someone in my area who can do this!
Hi, Wasn't really thinking of a V8, but maybe a V6 or a supped up R22. Problem right now is that I'm in Albuquerque NM and not connecting with a mechanic that can do this job here in our area.
Yeah. That would be tough to find someone that can do the work.
I would try posting an ad in Craigslist for a mechanic. Have him provide back ground reference and automotive certifications to prove he can do the work and be a honest person.
Or, maybe write to places like LC Engineering that only sell performance toyota engine parts to recommend a mechanic in your area.
Going off of what you've said so far, I think its reasonable that you are not a very experienced mechanic and most shops that you will find wont have the faintest clue about doing a swap from the 22r to a v6 or any other engine in this 20+ year old truck. Your best bet would be to find a long block performance 22r engine from places like LC engineering.com or 22reperformance.com and have that swapped in as a direct replacement engine for your truck.
Doing a motor swap of any kind isn't cheap and will quickly end up at twice the cost as you budget for. When you get into swapping engines that didn't originally come with that truck and you are paying a shop for the work, you will have to have deep pockets for the labor cost.
No, I'm not a mechanic. I do realize that this could be costly, but that isn't what I was asking about. Right now, all the money in the world isn't enough to fix my truck because I can't find anyone to do the work.
Ideas about how to find the right mechanic in my area is all that I was asking about. Then I can get a cost estimate and decide whether or not to proceed.
But, you didn't need to clarify. I saw the question and answered it with my suggestion. Just put a better 22r back into it.
These trucks are old and outdated and finding a specialist shop, near a specific city, who can do some odd ball swap (that you are not sure about), will be a needle in a hay stack search. Buying a better performing 22r engine will cost more up front but will be cheaper in labor cost of installation. And since it would be a direct replacement swap, any decent mechanic would be able to do it.
