Add-a-leaf questions ?

I've searched and can't find an appropriate answer, so looking for expert advice.
1989 4x4 regular cab, looking to install an aal, tore into the rear leaf springs the other night, got the U-bolts off OK, bump stop came off OK, then noticed that my rear springs are encased with some sort of other brackets that have a top and a bottom with some rubber inserts in them. Pulled off the top part and my top leaf spring has a "knob" where I was expecting to see some sort of bolt. I ended up stopping there and throwing it back together again. Will I need to drill this part out so that I can then install my bolt up through the middle of the springs ? Didn't play with it too much as it was raining and I only have so much patience.
Most of the trucks I've worked with before, only had the U-bolts and the bump stop. You removed them and dropped the axle down and proceeded from there. I've never seen this bracket type thing that actually goes around the center of my springs. Any insight would be appreciated.

I know what you are talking about, I ran into the same thing putting lifted springs on my 94 4x4. The springs where thicker than stock, so I couldn't use the factory plates you described. I took one of the haves off and left one to keep the U-bolts aligned. I don't remember if it was the top or the bottom, probly doesn't matter. Never had any problems.
