How to Measure RPM with a Sun Tach

Hello everyone -- I recently purchased a 1994 Toyota pickup 22RE engine that has a rpm surge when the ac is on. So I want to measure the engine RPM. I own a 1970s vintage Sun Tach that has 2 wires. When I connect them to the ig- and ground I do not get any readings. Any thoughts

Thanks,
Wayne

What model Sun is it? Most used a transmitter between the tach and the distributor.

It is a Sun 7601 tach/dwell bench unit. No transmitter involved.

IG- and ground are the correct spots, but long ago I read somewhere that old dwell/tachs like that didn't work on new transistorized ignitions and could even damage them. That's when I replaced my old bench unit with a newer handheld one.
