Hey, all. I have been watching semi paitently for a good buy on a local 89-94 4WD in a specific configuration that actually was produced, though it seems to be somewhat rare, and I`m geting tired of waiting. If I were to relax my requirements a bit to include the 3.0, it would be a lot easier, but I`m leary after reading so many headaches concerning the head gaskets. Also not so warm and fuzzy about the fuel efficiency hit for apparently little power gain compared to the 22RE that has been such a gem in my current 2WD, but I could get over that.
I know Toyota issued a recall and had some kind of fix for the head gasket problems, but did that actually make them as reliable as the fours? After a certain year, did they come off the assembly line with the new head gaskets right from the git-go? Is a 3VZE with improved or "fixed" head gasket trustworthy up to 300K miles like my 22RE has been? For an engine that has not been fixed, should I be able to have it done for a reasonable price, like under $1000? I am not completely opposed to doing it myself, but feel it`s probably beyond my scope, especially since I would be doing it under the blue sky and subject to whatever dust and crap is blowing around my yard while the thing is opened up.
Alternately, I could expand my search to include Gen 1 Tacos which (which also seem to be in kind of short supply in standard cab/standard trans configuration), or just sit on my hands until I eventually find what I really want. They are out there, but I don`t want to haul one back from afar sine it means a drive just to inspect, and then I`m rolling the dice to see if it will pass smog in my county. Thanks for any advice!
