Instrument cluster removal

Does anybody have the directions to remove an instrument cluster on a 89 Toyota PU SR5 4x4. I need to replace the speedometer cable and hate ripping plastic tabs off.

do '89's have a speedo cable? my '94 has a speed sensor, not a cable.

might want to double check that.

but to answer your question about dash removal, you need to start from the glove box and work your way to the left.

I've replaced my cluster and didn't have to remove any of the passenger side dash. I did have to remove from the bottom up on the drivers side, so start with the lower pieces and also the bezels that go around the radio and hvac controls and work your way up. Once all that's removed, you can then unscrew out the cluster and hopefully gain access to the back to unhook the cable. My suggestion, if something seems blocked by another item, don't try to force it, just remove the other item, it'll be worth it later when you dont have broken pieces.

BTW there was a change over year from which they moved from cable driven to electronic. I think its around 92. So most likely you do have a speedo cable.

they changed the dash design somewhere between '91 and '94, as mine is different from my friend's '91.

if you click the link in my sig, you can see some step by step pics. (just stop before you get to the heater core. haha
