Cost of Engine Re-Build for 22RE Motor

Hi Folks

I have a 93 4x2 Pick-Up which I bought new and intend to keep forever. At 400,000 I'm looking at an engine re-build. What would be the avg estimated cost to re-build one of these motors?

Thanks
Eric

you're keeping it forever. cool!

since you're committed, I could only guess having a shop do it (no touch) with top and bottem ends, including bearings, decking, honing, etc it would be around $1800-2200.

it's allot of work, but you're keeping the truck. it should last another 400,000 (aside regular stuff) if it's done right.

talk to engnbuilder or whatever his handle is ? he can give you a swap-out price iirc.

Is the engine burning oil or making noises? if not then keep driving her for another 400k miles, the 22R-E engines are one of the best engines ever made by anyone, see below for real world cases:

Toyota Pickup Found in Alaska River, Runs!:

http://www.jalopnik.com/cars/novelti...uns-136733.php

1991 Toyota 2wd pickup with over 1 million miles:

http://www.racetoretirement.org

as long as the oil is changed regularly, use an oil filter with a good "anti-drain back valve" and use only Toyota long life radiator coolant which is low in silicates.Avoid jack rabbit driving and don't allow engine to overheat or run above 190 degrees Ferenheit.

If your engine has serious problems then from all of the reading I have done usually 70% or so of rebuilt 22R-E's won't last more than 200K miles so I suggest instead to buy a used one with up to 180K or so from junk yards or private sale for around $200-350 no more.

In North America the 22R & 22R-E s are used in the following:

22R
1981-82 Toyota Corona
1981-83 Celica
1981-87 Toyota pickup (up to 1990 on 2wd)
1984-87 Toyota 4-Runner

22R-E (22REC=California emissions=extra charcoal canister)
1983-85 Celica
1985-95 Toyota pickup
1985-95 Toyota 4-Runner

22RTE (Turbo EFI)
1985-87 Toyota pickup
1985-87 Toyota 4-Runner

If you want to rebuild yours here are the best brand of aftermarket engine parts to use on the 20R & 22R series Toyota motors:

http://www.engnbldr.com
http://www.22r.biz
http://www.mizumoauto.com
http://www.rpmrons.com/toyotatiming.html

and if you choose to buy from Toyota these places have the best prices in the USA & probably the whole world:

http://www.toyotapartsales.com (1-866-221-4696)
http://www.1sttoyotaparts.com/partscat.html (10% shipping by Fed Ex or free shipping with $100 & over speak to Roger at 1-888-271-3948)
http://www.toyotadiscountparts.com (free shipping with $100 & up)
http://www.toyotapartsandservice.com (part # lookup)
http://www.autopartsonlinecanada.com

To answer your question, locally engine rebuild shops charge $1400 to rebuild and about $300 to remove engine and $300 to re-install.

Those are Early style head/block. I would suggest to stay away from those as it will require modifications to fit the EFI, EGR component and exhaust manifold. the Celica variant had the motor mount at different location which will require redrilling the block at a different spot for the oil sender pick-up. It's doable, but it's more trouble. Also replacement parts are slighty harder to get for this variante since it was produce in less quantity and for a shorter time.

If you are going for a complete rebuilt and you plan to keep it for a long time, you should weight the pros and cons of dual row timing chain kit and/or metalic chain guide.

My rides:
85 Celica GT-S 22re (Summer car 85k miles)
90 2wd KC pick-up 22re (Daily driver 184k miles)
87 4X4 4runner 22re (Sold)

Yes, for a 93 truck you need an 85+ engine to make re-installation smooth.

And $995 at this place http://tinyurl.com/4wd8sb seems too cheap, I'd be a little leery.

The guy calls it a short block, a long block, a short block with head.

$995 is right for a short block, a new head is in the $300-400 range, and a long block is around $1800 (I've been looking for myself).
