Canada big problem...

Hi, my name is Patrice

I just join that group recently. I own a pick up 4x4 1991 with the four cylinder engine. Here is my problem. When i am driving over 80 kpm i can ear a loud noise (and the truck is shaking) comming from under the truck, somewhere between the engine and the back. The noise get louder while i'am going faster. If i put the truck on neutral while it running (over 80)the noise is still there. If I push the cluth pedal, the noise is still there. BUT, if i'm releasing the gas pedal i am not earing the noise anymore ??? At the moment that i put the feet on the gas pedal the noise is coming back...IT is not the muffler (that is for sure). Do you think it's the differential or the transfercase ? Can it be a universal joint ?

Thank's for the answer

i agree it sounds like the drive shaft.check all the joints make sure they have grease and aren't loose when you move the shaft at the u joints.if one of them has bad needle bearings it will most likely be dry and really loose.

I had the exact same problem. The bearings in the rear u-joint fell apart and were causing the drive shaft to shake. Just replace the u-joint and you should be golden.

could be u-joints, climb under and see if the ujoints have play, and see if they get hot after driving.

But your description sounds more like a a differential or trans problem.

you could always put it up on stands and look under there while its running in drive. See if anything isn't normal... like drive shaft wobble.

If your carefully and smart about it it's perfectly safe. You gotta get all four wheels off the ground and make sure its stable but I've done it dozens of times. I gives you the opportunity to really see whats going on down there.
