Toyota made a 4-speed model manual transmission? Was it that much cheaper to manufacture for the base model comsumers? I would think not. My '89 is a 4-spd and I hate the higher revs.
I'm short on cash and my truck has a lot of other priority things I'd like to fix/replace so that's the reason why I haven't switched it to a 5-spd. Then again, I got my truck free from my friend so I won't complain too much...
Well, if it cost Toyota an additional $100 to make a 5 speed for one truck, how much would it be for 100,000 trucks? And what would that $100 translates to for Mr Consumer when he pays for the truck? I doubt very much he will just be paying $100.
You should have a 3.07 geared differential. In 4th gear, your rpms should be same as a 5 speed in 5th gear, at the same speed. (Final ratios are the same.)
I LIKE my 4 speed! Less shifting!

AnotherJeff- are any of ALL THOSE Toyota trucks you own a parts truck? My 89' 2WD 3VZE XtraCab needs alot of parts! PM me if one of them is....

This is even more interesting. Let me check my axle code.
i think it has more to do with EPA and passing emissions than why they didn't just put in a 5 speed.
Are you kidding?????????? They made a 5 speed the same year they made the 4 speed.
On a BASE model vehicle they were trying to sell they did things like a 4 speed trans, rubber mat instead of carpet, l/s mirror only, no A/C. On some of the early 80's trucks they even had manual steering. It was done to cut costs, nothing more. This way they could sell a base truck cheap.

My '89 plain jane has rubber mats, 4 spd, l/s mirror only, and manual steering.
From my little bit of reading it seems the 4spd final ratio was "lower" than the 5spd resulting in higher engine revs at hwy speeds? I'd sure like to know if the ratios are the same like AnotherJeff says??? I also like the less gears to go through aspect!
i have a 4speed w/o power steering.. i really like no power steering... but i am weird the person i bought it from put 3:43 rear end in it i am trying to find the original 3:07 ratio mine came with a axle code G662 and i am trying to find a G6223 only diff is 2 = 2 Pinion, Open Diff
3 = 2 Pinion, Limited Slip
wow, a lot of manual steering peeps coming out of the wood works. i too only have manual steering.
rickisan...if i understand anotherjeff correctly, our lower gear in the diff. is supposed to make up for the non-existent 5th gear, thus producing same rpms as the 5-spd would in 5th gear?? I have no idea cause I don't have a tach. So what that means is, us 4-speeders should get a 5-spd trans to get an "overdrive" when in 5th.
Well, armstrong steering is not that bad with little 2wd tires! I drove around for a few days with no power steering with 33x12.50" mudders... That was NOT fun with a 13" Grant gt
22re's need to rev to make power... get used to it

to open my owners manual and research this myself. When I'm going 60 mph in 4th with my 4sp manual trans is my motor turning the same rpm as a guy going 60 mph in 5th with a 5sp maunal trans....?
On some cars the 4sp's 4th's are geared higher than the 5sp's 5th. The 4's use the same first 4 gears as the 5's and so the 5th on a 5sp is actually an overdrive like magic_truck says. If our 4's on these Toyota's are like what I'm describing then our engine rpm's will be higher in 4th gear than the 5sp's in 5th at the same mph.
Ok gotta go get that owners manual way out in the back yard
