depending..

on how bad the rust is, i'd suggest a brillo pad, and some elbow grease.

then put some polish on it and it will stay 4-5 months.

mine shines like new when i do this. i hadn't considered a clear coat for longevity.

best tool i used to take rust off is basically anything that can sand. like hand sanding.

i had this tool with a handle that holds on a sheet of sanding material, but eventually the material gave away and... no more of that so i used this spongy thing with sandpaper texture all over it.

mothers makes a polish that tears off in a silver can, i forget the name. the polish isn't nearly as important as -not- sanding off the good surface too far and exposing plain steel beneath the chrome plating.

Looks like you got it down but for anyone else looking for some help I use the wenol twins. http://www.wenol-polish.com/

I polished my rims and center caps up with them then coated them with Klasse AIO and SG. I have pictures if anyone cares to see.

Ha I'm still here. Kinda slowed down because of college though.

I was happy with them at the end but some day I'd like to go back with an electric polisher to give it some more elbow grease. My little hands just weren't cutting it.
