Question about VO6 recall

I just bought my brother in laws 94 4X4 SR5 Pickup with a bad motor. He had taken it to a mechanic who I suspect knew nothing about V6 engines, and was told the engine was shot. They took off the cam gears, left valve cover and removed the cam. Now after reading this forum I suspect that it just blew the head gasket. I just called Toyota and they indicated that the VO6 recall was not done on the tuck and that I should contact my local dealer. Now my question?? If anyone has had this recall done, should I try to reassemble the engine or just make sure all the parts are there and hope for the best? The truck has 225,000 miles and is in great shape, so if I can get it fixed or even get a new engine this will be the best $500 I ever spent.

Thanks
Dennis

Would they even warrant a recall that was done 15 years ago? I find that funny.

If the recall was not done you MIGHT be able to find a dealer that might do it. I hear they try not to do them if they are that high in mileage...

But go to your local dealers and ask them if the truck is covered.

I called Toyota Corporate Customer Service and they said that the truck was still covered by the recall. I am going to check with my local dealer to see how receptive they are to do it. I started reassembling the engine and found that the drive pin on the left cam was sheared off which may explain why they were looking at the left side. Now I have got to get the pin out. Any suggestions?

make sure the cam turns. A seized cam wil shear the pin right off. If the cam is seized then it will somehow have to be due to a blown headgasket.

Wink

I got my 91 toyota in Jan '09. It was very high km. In the 377,000 Km range. My son told me they had a recall on the steering so I phoned and asked. They told me that my truck hadn't been done so I took it in and they fixed the steering. When I went to pick it up he told me it was a day of freebies for me! Said the truck had a HG recall as well and it hadn't been done on this trucks VIN. It is in the toyota dealer right now getting fixed. I may have to pay for a new timing belt, but what the heck. My little truck is a sweet ride and I am trying to get it all fixed up.
