Location of my DLC(Data Link Connector)?

It says under my hood in order for me to check the timing on my 1994 Toyota Pickup V6 3.0L EFI 4x4 ext I have to have the DLC(Data Link Connector) short-circuited at idle speed. But I cannot find it. Where is it located? What does it mean by short-circuited?

Auto zone says it's located on drive side wheel well. But there are more then one plugs in the location and i'd hate to disconnect the wrong one. I'm guessing short-circuit means unplug in technical terms.

You need to open up the little grey box next to the fuse box (under the hood, on passenger side, behind battery). It will read 'diagnostics', now take a paperclip and jump the TE1 and E1 connectors.

You will hear an audible drop in idle when you complete the circut.

When the truck is off, this is how you check for trouble codes in the ECM.

1991 Pickup - 3vze - 4x4 - SR5 - 5sp- 270k.

when i connect the te1 and e1 it doesn't idle down. i tried with copper wire and a paper clip.

Mine doesn't either. Just check that the CEL is flashing when ignition is on (before starting motor). If it's flashing, the jumper is set correctly and you can go ahead and set the timing.

If the IDL & E2 terminals of the tps do not have continuity when the throttle plate is closed (idle position), that will prevent the CEL from flashing. I'm not sure, but I suspect that it may also interfere with the setting of the TE1 jumper, so you may have to fix that before you can get set the timing properly.

i brought the truck down to my local mechanic and he gave it a try.(did the same thing i did) It ended up working out the same way and telling me i set the timing right, but the reason y i was checking the timing is because it seemed to be idling a little rough ever cense i had it (4 months). the truck was missing it's idle adjustment screw ...1 problem, and it has a ripped intake hose which we have patched for now but is leaking(mechanic found). Our patch wasn't working as well as we though. Sense the leak is after the air flow censor it isn't reading the right mixture. That's what we believe to be the source of the little roughtness. So to sum it up we have a new intake hose coming. Get all that?

Sounds like you're on the right track. For finishing touches, you may want to replace O2 sensor if it has over 90k miles, and check the tps & vafm with an ohmmeter. Engine won't run right unless all three of those sensors (plus the ECT) are working perfectly. Search this forum for info on how to test.

Do yourself a favor. Since you don't know what you are doing, take it to a dealer and ask them to show you. Most will.
