What are the truck "generations"

I keep seeing all of these post referring to certain generation trucks. I've got a 1994 Toyota 4X4 Pickup and I have no idea what generation truck it is. Can someone please post how many generations of trucks there were and what year models are in what generation? I don't understand why people just don't give their year model when posting.

Ok, thanks, but what does that mean? Are all of the trucks within a given generation exactly the same?

very closely alike in its own generation.

I know the 5th gen splits into two gens. 89-91 have different grilles and bumpers/ valance.

93's and up have 3rd brake light.

93 and up do not all have third brake lights, and I believe at least some 92's had the third brake lights.

the main difference is 89-91 had the word "TOYOTA" on the Grille. 92-95.5 have got the Toyota logo. And the addition of the 3rd brake light in 93-ish, ugly in my opinion.

89-91 2WD has the TOYOTA "widebar" grille up front, with the addition of a different Valance.
89-91 4WD has the TOYOTA grille also, but the difference between 89-91 from 92-95.5 was the bumper. The 89-91 had 3 pieces if i remember, but another way to look is to see if the top portion of the bumper was flat or not.

I think the 3rdBrake light looks fine on xtra cabs but makes the reg cabs look worse. I like having it, but the placement is the only problem i have with it. I think it would have been better if it wasn't so tall. I would probably shave mine off and make it part of the cab, right over the rear window. Low Profile... and smoked

I think the 92+ 2WD grille looks best

I agree, but I'm not a big fan of the forward slashed parking lights...

There where some other changes done, such as intergrated crash protection in the doors (93 I think). Hydralic t-belt tensioner (92 I think)

I know this is an extremely late post. But Motor Trends published an article about the 20 Years and Beyond of the Toyota Tacoma. The third brake light was introduced in '94 and apparently out 5th generations are actually 6th generations according to the article.
