22re rebuild recommendations?

Looking for someone to rebuild my 1994 22re. It has a blown head gasket and the engine seems to be making noise from bottom end. Can anyone recommend someone in the triad area of NC?

Whatever you do, make sure they use the metal guide (steel rail) for the timing chain instead of the stock plastic one, and I'd also make sure they check/replace the timing cover...they wear thin due to the timing chain slapping on them (due to the shitty plastic guide).

There is a guy in kannapolis,nc that advertises a rebuilt engine for $600. I called him today and he said he could rebuild mine, resurface the head, new oil and water pump, new timing chain, and install it back into the truck for total $1300. Does that sound like a good deal?

My friend just spent $3000 for his '87 22RE...$1300 seems light, but it is a tough economy for everyone. I'd check warranty and BBB info.

Has anyone ever heard of a cracked head on a 22re? My dads mechanic said that he has never seen one with a blown head gasket, that it has always been a cracked head. Its only using about a cup of coolant a week and the oil isnt milky so he said it wouldnt hurt to drive it alittle while longer.

800 is one of the cheapest prices I have seen, I am in the market myself..... But i haven't decided on a rebuild or buying a reman engine.

If someone can vouch for the quality of those engines I may have to go see this guy.

Poteat seems to have good reviews. I've checked on the internet and on other forums. I called him the other day and he has a couple 22re's ready to go for $936. That is with a new head. A little cheaper if you use your old head. Also, comes with metal backed guides for timing chain.

If it sounds too good to be true it usually is. I recommend Jasper Engines and Transmissions 3 year 1000,000 mile warranty (anywhere you might be traveling and no hassles) look on there web sight or call them and ask for one and use one of there preferred installers after all you get what you pay for. I just looked it up $2436.00 If you don't want gamble and pay out again in the near future pay a little extra. After all in most warranty's the deck is stacked.

I reciently just built my own engine with all the best parts which were mostly DNJ and Japan parts (not Chinese) (wholesale from engine builder in Oregon) I spent 0ver $500.00 (probably 8-900 at autozone) on just the parts and $380.00 on the machine shop $800.00 doesn't add up. If you are not capable of building your own engine I still say go with a Jasper If you can find an installer that charged labor only you can probably get the engine for under $2000.00
