92 toyota steering problems

The steering on my truck has become limited on how far I can turn the wheels. It sometime feels a little jerky when you are cranking it hard to turn. .There is some oil that has sprayed the passanger side wheel well. Any idea what could be causing the limited steering?

Thanks

If you have power steering, I'd start by checking the fluid level in the reservoir.

Check the fluid first.

does it stop like it's binding or do you just lose power assist? try turning to the lock while the trucks moving. try jacking up the front end and turning the wheel with the engine off (and on)

Topped up the power steering fluid...so thats all good. It is binding...not losing any power when turning. I just took it for a drive...its making a few funny noises...especialy when it is in 4 wheel It sounds like a rubbing grinding noise. When I park the truck with the steering cranked I cant see anywhere it is rubbing.?

Hey Kamesama,
My truck has the IFS. Would the CV's effect steering? The sound when I crank it hard to the left is a crunching....then rubbing sound. As you can tell by my diagnosis...I am a rookie.

oh, ha, yea...IFS doh

How does it drive in 4x4? should be jerky and making noise even going straight in 4x if the CVs are causing it to bind. Should but not always.

You could also leave it in 2wd, lift the front, and try to turn the wheels and CVs to see what/where is binding. If it's the CVs it'll get harder to spin the shafts the greater the articulation angle. Or you'll feel it binding/moving/etc.
