89 pickup carb problems

Actually I have two problems with my pickup; my two sons. Alex, 18 rearended someone in town 2 years ago. Russell, 20 has helped us put 230,000 miles on my baby. My 22re powered 2wd truck is running so rich that it almost stalls. Someone told me not to touch the carb because it is too complicated. There are a lot of vacume tubes and hoses there. I used to rebuild the carbs on my 1960's cars. Can the average guy do it now?

First, are you sure it is a 22RE? The "E" means it is fuel injected. If it is not injected, you should have no problem rebuilding the carb. My experience rebuilding carbs is similar to yours. I went through the carb on my daughter's '87 with only one minor problem. As I recollect, the automatic choke did not function properly. I did not pursue the problem because the weather doesn't get very cold where we lived then. I would recommend you find a shop manual (preferably the factory manual) before you start, though.

You are correct. It is a 22R. I'm new to this nomenclature so I checked again last night and saw that I had been mistaken. Thanks for your reply. DY

P.s.

Reb,
I couldn't find a tag on the carb telling make and model. Did they have more than one type available in 89? Thanks, DY

I don't know whether Toyota offered more than one model of carburetor, though I doubt it. I think the US manufacturers are more likely to change parts models during a model year. When I overhauled my daughter's '87 carb I used my '85 Toyota shop manual and saw no differences. One possibility you might want to check into is that a previous owner might have put on an aftermarket carb, though.

Thanks Reb

The auto parts guy said there were two kits so I'll have to take the tag with me. With any luck I'll get the correct kit. DY
