Idling problems w/'93 pickup

I recently bought a 1993 2wd toyota pickup with a 22R-E engine. It seemed to be well taken care of and had only 61,000 miles when I bought it.

After putting approximately 4,000 miles on it, it started having a rough idle. It idles up and down or surges and it idles at its worst when I have my foot on the brake. The engine acts like it's gasping for breath. I've taken it to a toyota dealership four times and they haven't been able to determine what's wrong with it. They told me that no code came up when they scanned it with a computer. Everybody seems to think that it's a vacuum leak, but nobody can find it or hear it. I've checked all the vacuum lines and the intake manifold gasket. I don't smell antifreeze and the oil is clean,so I don't think it's the head gasket. The brake booster was checked out and appeared to be functioning properly. The toyota dealership checked the air flow meter and said that it appeared to be functioning properly. It runs great, except for the idling problem.

Has anyone else had a similiar problem or might know what to do? Thanks.

You can eliminate the brake booster by disconnecting the hose and plugging it temporarily. If the problem goes away, you have isolated the culprit. The other area I would look at is the Thottle Position Sensor. This part can function at certain rpms and not at others. It can be tested with a volt-ohm meter and it must function through a range of throttle opening positions. It could be failing at the idle or just off idle position and then seem to be all right at other settings. Let's hope it's something minor like that. Good Luck.

I hope it's something minor. The truck seems to run great except while idling. Thanks.

same problem cant figure it out there are a few others ive seen on here it seems to bee an ongoing epidemic with th 22re.. im thinking it might be electrical cuz when i remove the brake fuse it does not do it. im thinking of re wiring the chassis grounds and seeing if it helps. or mabu wiring the brakes seperate with new wires to the pedal switch. i dunno if this is your problem but i hope it helps you. give it a try and tell me your results.

Canada

check the plastic joiners for the vacuum lines that are right on top of the valve cover.they're kinda shaped like an F i think, anyway, they crack easy and it's sometimes hard to see.my 4runner did the same thing and i found it last time i did the head gasket. i put some 5-minute epoxy on it and it's been fine.

ive tried checking all my vacuum lines by spraying ether all around the lines and it didnt change idle speed whatsoever.

I think I know what your problem is. There is a vacuum assisted device that raises your idle speed when the A/C is on. It is screwed into the drivers side of the TB. It has a large screw with a spring under it. I don't know if it is out of adjustment or if I needs to be replaced. Check it out.

yes that is the device that i adjusted and it fixed my problem.. what happens is if the idle is too high it will do this you can also adjust the air screw on the throttle body to where the idle goes down slightly, wqhat you want is about 800 rpm. with no ac and about 850 with ac

My 95 is having the same problem. It runs great, it idles in neutral fine but, it idles rough when it is in gear and you have the brake on at a stop light.

USA OMG This is an epademic!

92 4x4 with 22RE fuel injected.
The truck idles around 1500 ever since I bought it. I always thaought it was weird. I removed the throttle body and cleaned it out and I must have bumped something because now the truck idles all out of wack. It idles up to 2000 rpm then down to 1000. Up-and-down very very frequently.

Yesterday I found that it only idles bad when I put my foot on the brakes. I disconnected the vaccume lead going to the brake booster and the problem went away. But I need the brake booster. So I reconnected it after checking the doo-dad air stopper thingy that connectes the lines together. HMMMM... Am I blaming the brake booster prematurly? The black doo-hicky that goes into the side of the valve cover with the spring on it might be the issue? DOES anyone have a vaccume diagram for this device?

I bought a Chilton book last night and its a flipping JOKE. Save your money. It's advertised "Includes detailed vaccume diagrams" or something like that on the front. When I opened the book to the diagrams, there little 2 inch pictures you need a microscope to read! I think maybe I hooked my black doo-hicky with a spring up wrong. (even though I noted every lines position). Darn vaccume lines!
