1989 Pickup Blower Resistor

My heater fan only works on high. I've been told its a problem with the blower resistor. Can someone tell me how to find and replace it? Thanks.

It's mounted in the ductwork, under the pass side dash (under the glovebox).
Look for a plug with 4 wires. 2 screws hold it in.

Buy a toyota part! Don't go aftermarket. My dealer wanted $80 for the resister so I got an aftermarket for $25. I got all my speeds back but they are out of order now haha!

Goes off - slow - medium- slow/medium- fast

Lol.

Well - Oops! I just bought one from NAPA (cheap and convenient). I'll let you know whether it works right.

cool, i was wondering what the price was for this piece. my blower motor is squeaking a little, so it's time to refresh things in there too.

177,000 miles, and so far this POJ $1800 truck just keeps on costing me money !

timing chain
tie rod ends
brake pads

sheesh, will it ever end ? (i'm kidding, the wreck when the kid hit me already paid for the truck once - now i'm looking for another donation to put me ahead of the game !)

Wow. This thread has 3 times the posts in the last three days then it did for the first 4 years. The blower resistor was burnt out in my 1989 when I got it but I thought the switch was bad as it had medium and high, not just high like when they usually burn out. I already had the dash apart from putting my stereo and gauges in so I pulled it andsure enough it was pretty crispy. I got one from NAPA for $35 and it works fine so far. The blower motor resistor on my 1997 Nissan Altima went out (boy do I have bad luck or what?) and on that one the resistor is actually a circuit board, not the coil of resistor windings like on the truck.

Blower fixed!

Thanks to all your suggestions I bought a new blower motor resistor yesterday and installed it and my fan now works at all the speeds! If I knew it was this easy to fix I would have done it years ago. The only suggestion I could add is that I used a 4" piece of duct tape torn in half to keep the resistor in place while I assembled the screws. I removed the tape, plugged it in and it works! Awesome! Thanks again!

Another word of caution - don't rely on eBay parts either. I had a switch problem awhile back, it would only work on fan speeds 1, 2 and 4. I knew it was the switch, because if I jiggled the switch lever around I could get 3, but only briefly. Of course, speed 3 is the one I use most often, because 1 and 2 don't blow much air and 4 is too noisy.

I bought a switch on eBay, installed it, and it had the SAME problem as my old one!!! It wouldn't be so bad if you didn't have to disassemble most of the dash to get to it.

Cheers,
Paul
