1990 Pickup-Ignition Switch?

Hey, I have a 1990 Toyota 22Re 4wd pickup. My ignition switch is bad and I am using two screwdrivers to start my truck. I am disconnecting the ignition lead from my starter and am placing a screwdriver in its place, I then connect another screwdriver from the positive terminal lead(on my starter), and touch it to the first screwdriver to start my car (bypassing the ignition switch). The question is how do I remove and replace my ignition switch?

Are you sure it is your ignition switch ? It is pretty straight forward removing from what I remember. There is the key tumbler that removes and then there is the ignition contacts. The contacts sometimes just need to be cleaned. Also, you may think it is the ignition and it turns out to be something else.

Well, I replaced the starter three times, checked my connections and replaced my positive/ground cables(They were bad), replaced alternator(It was bad), replaced my battery(Terminals melted on trail), and checked for power everywhere with a digital multimeter. I found that I am not getting power(sometimes, its hit and miss) to my starter from the ignition lead. What else could be causing this bad connection to the lead and how do I fix it.

Both, the clutch activates the switch, but there is also a neutral switch that allows you to bypass using the clutch. They do the same thing.

On my 90 4Runner AND my 87 truck, it matters not whether you are in gear or in neutral. The clutch MUST be depressed to engage the starter. The neutral safety switch is for automatic transmissions. There is a switch on the dash that bypasses the clutch switch. My buddies 4Runner has a hit and miss clutch switch. We wound up bypassing it, since we generally know to push in the clutch before we start anyway. I would check voltage on both sides of that clutch switch and see if it's the problem.

The reason I asked above about why you think its your ignition is because I probably have the same problem as you. It's not the ignition, BUT.........I don't know what the problem IS.
Let me see, sometimes you go to start your truck and all the light come on but starter does not crank. Sometimes works just fine. Hit or miss, hot or cold.
I am an electronic technician by trade and this one has been driving me crazy. The starter solenoid is only getting about 7v when the problem occurs. That is not enough to push the plunger out to crank the engine. WHY? I don't know but I took voltage readings between the ignition and the starter, it is somewhere in between.
What I have done is install a manual starter push button. It is installed in the hole for the dimmer switch. I ran a wire from battery (+) to one lead of the switch and a wire from the other lead to the starter solenoid. Push the button and the engine will crank, even if the key is not in the ignition. However, it will not start unless the key is in the ON position.
I thought it was a grounding problem and have run an extra ground from the battery to the ECU to the ECT to the fuse box and over to the alternator. No help.
Haven't had much time to look at it lately and the starter button makes it less urgent. Let me know if you figure something out.

My book mentions a clutch start relay, but I have an auto. Is there a starter relay for an auto? Where?

this is from the link posted by ElmerFudd

The starter relays on most of your Toyota trucks are located either in the relay block in the engine compartment or on the driver's side junction block. The cover for the relay compartments should be marked, "starter'' or the relay will have a part number with a suffix of 28300-XXXXX. Simply locate the relay, pull it out, and install a new one if needed.

I've rebuilt relays.. it's really not hard, they're really very simple. There's a current run to the relay causing an electromagnetic field that draws one contact into the other.. on every relay I've had to repair the contact that is drawn by the electromagnet is missing a bead of solder that makes the contact. If you have any experience with soldering, or know anyone who does it's easily repairable.

I read that the first time it was posted. What I am saying is that I have a '86 4runner w/ 22re and auto trans.......there is NO relay in either one of those spots marked starter or with that part #. There is the EFI main relay by the fuse box in the cab and the is only 1 relay in the engine compartment but it is labeled HEAD and does not have that part #.

So, the question is: Does an auto trans, 22re have a starter relay? If so, where.
